Why Vietnam History Museum is special ?
The Saigon’s National History Museum, established in the 1920s as the Musee Louis Finot, is in a building which typifies Indochinese architecture. Occupying an area of more than 2,000 square metres, the museum traces the history of the Vietnamese people with displays of cultural and ethnological significance. Display text is written in Vietnamese, English and French. When in HCMC, make sure to visit the National History Museum for exciting displays and artifacts.
Check out displays of stone tools, Roman coins, cannons and items from Vietnam’s ethnic minorities.
The highlight of the collection are the statues of the Cham empire, one of the most powerful ancient polities in what would become Indochina, as well as of some related city states. These are displayed in new, very well-done rooms, while the rest of the museum has the ancient, slightly faded charm of the time of its origins. While, again, no comparison to Phnom Penh, this is worth looking at if you are into art history especially; stunning, for instance, the oldest wooden Buddha statues in the world.
