Open Studio | Mike Orrey/ Barefoot Arts Meander 24 – 27 September 2026
Kenton on Sea & Bushmans River Mouth
Watercolour Artist @ The Studio, Cycad Square, Bushmans River Mouth
“Every painting teaches me something."
Some artists paint to capture a place. Mike Orrey paints to capture a feeling.
With a successful career in graphic design and advertising behind him, Mike has returned to a passion that first began in childhood. Today, watercolour has become both a creative challenge and a deeply personal journey of discovery.
For Mike, every painting is an experiment.
"I don't think one should be too precious," he says. "Every painting teaches me something."
Working quickly and instinctively, he allows the unpredictable nature of watercolour to guide the process. The movement of pigment across the paper, the transparency of layered washes and the happy accidents that emerge are all part of the magic.
"You can't really control watercolour," he explains. "You can steer it and plan it. But it does tend to have a mind of its own”.
Inspired by rivers, boats, birds and the ever-changing quality of light, Mike is constantly searching for new ways to interpret familiar scenes. His sketchbooks are filled with studies that explore reflections on water, the textures of indigenous bush, distant figures and the subtle moods of the landscape.
Rather than seeing these paintings as finished works, Mike views them as stepping stones towards something new. Every sketch, every brushstroke and every experiment becomes part of his ongoing artistic journey.
His background in graphic design also brings a contemporary dimension to his work. Selected paintings are carefully scanned at extremely high resolution and reproduced using museum-quality archival inks on acid-free paper, creating beautiful fine art prints that faithfully retain every delicate detail of the original watercolours and will last for decades.
“Look to see….and not to look.” is a mantra he endeavours to live by.
Come and meet an artist who is rediscovering the joy of painting, one brushstroke at a time.

Kenton on Sea & Bushmans River Mouth
The Studio 1 Cycad Square Bushmans River Mouth
Gallery • Workshops • Art Supplies
Some spaces have history. Others have heart. The Studio has both.
Nearly a century ago, this beautiful building was Kenton-on-Sea's original trading store, serving the small riverside community when a ferry still crossed the Bushman’s River. Today, owner and artist Lindy Berrington is carefully restoring the building, giving it a new life as a vibrant creative hub where artists gather to learn, exhibit and be inspired.
Lindy's own journey to becoming an artist has been anything but conventional. After studying accounting and running a successful interior décor business in Botswana, she discovered painting almost by chance while attending an art workshop. What began as a single course became a lifelong passion.
"I think art is a journey," says Lindy. "Every milestone teaches you something, and you never stop learning."
That philosophy shapes everything at The Studio. Together with artist and tutor Ruth Walter, Lindy hosts small, welcoming workshops designed to build confidence and encourage creativity. Whether you're picking up a paintbrush for the first time or developing your own artistic style, the emphasis is on learning in a supportive environment where every artist can grow.
Visitors to the Barefoot Arts Meander will discover more than just a gallery. Alongside Lindy's paintings, The Studio will feature expressive watercolours by Mike Orrey and striking photography by Sophie Smith, thoughtfully curated within this beautifully restored historic space.
You'll also find a carefully selected range of quality art materials, making The Studio a valuable resource for both local artists and visitors inspired to begin their own creative journey.
Step inside, explore the gallery, meet the artists, and discover why The Studio has quickly become one of Kenton's most inspiring creative spaces.

Woodturning & Fine Woodcraft
8A Kiewiet Street, Bushmans River
Some people discover their passion later in life. Rob Moss found his as a schoolboy.
From his very first woodworking classes in primary school to his time in the hobbies club at Kingswood College, Rob has always been happiest with a piece of timber in his hands.
Although farming became his livelihood, woodworking remained his true calling. During the drought years, he turned his passion into a business, crafting beautiful functional pieces that found eager buyers at markets, particularly on The Green during the National Arts Festival in Makhanda.
Today, Rob is recognised throughout Kenton-on-Sea and Bushmans River for the quality and craftsmanship of his work. As a member of the Makhanda Woodworkers Guild, he continues to learn from fellow craftsmen while generously sharing his own knowledge with the next generation of woodworkers.
During the Barefoot Arts Meander, visitors will have the rare opportunity to watch Rob at work on his woodturning lathe, transforming a simple piece of timber into a beautifully crafted object.
There is something quite magical about watching wood shavings curl away as each piece reveals its own unique character.
Come and experience traditional craftsmanship in action.
