ℹ️ Anton shares about the process behind making a Stone Sculpture:

“ To do this, I decided to make it a project as communal as possible by employing a number of people to collect stones from the mountain and dressing them by hand, then laying them into the mold of the Reflect piece, one by one securing them with a stone- paste made from pulverized stone and resin.

This is a painstaking process that keeps three artisans busy full time for approx 6– 8 weeks. A thick layer of glass fibre is applied on the inside of the sculpture and a steel armature to give the work strength.

Steel reinforcing rods protrude from the feet of the sculpture to which a steel cage is welded.

The sculpture is then placed upright into a square steel mold into which concrete is poured to form a concrete base on which the sculpture stands. “

WHO IS ANTON SMIT ?

Anton Smit is widely perceived as a deeply
spiritual, disciplined, and visionary figure
whose personality is inextricably linked to
his creative output.

Observers and critics often describe him as a “force of nature” due to his relentless work ethic and the monumental scale of his ambitions.

His character is characterised by a profound sense of faith and a belief that human existence is a spiritual journey manifesting in a physical
realm of “discovering miracles” through art.

FAITH, SUFFERING, AND GLORY

The interplay between suffering and
glory is a recurring narrative in Smit’s
larger-than-life installations. Drawing
from his own profound faith, Smit views
the act of creation as a spiritual discipline.

Overlapping Hands: Visualizing Our Connection to Nature and Each Other

Artwork: WHIRLWIND - “IZANDLA ZIYAGEZANA”

“Hands wash each other” and “One good turn deserves another”

At the heart of Anton Smit’s work lies a profound exploration of the human spirit.

Known for sculptures that navigate the complex landscapes of reconciliation, glory, and suffering, Smit’s latest series – Tornado and Whirlwind – offers a poignant visual metaphor for our modern world.

Whether rendered in large-scale public installations or intimate gallery pieces, these art works serve as a force of nature, pulling the viewer into a deep conversation about what it means to be part of a whole.

The Power of the “Whirlwind“

This sculpture series features a recurring theme of overlapping hands that form a seamless, dynamic circle. These sculptures are not merely static objects; they are rhythmic compositions that speak to the interconnectedness of all life.

“Whirlwind” and “ Tornado” are from Anton’s Abstracts Series, and have editions available

Anton shares more about his inspiration:

This physical transcendentalism of sculpture give life to objects by a system of interpenetration

– Objects do not exist in isolation
– They cut through and divide the surrounding space in an arabesque of directional curves

Aspired to proceed from a realm of chance, of dream that has significance for life but superior to it – a realm of super-reality.
