SEASON 1 FINALE EPISODE 9 : THE HAARLEM | THE CAPE THE GENESIS OF A PEOPLE | Dr Bruno Werz , FSA.

In this episode of The Southern Question, Jolene sits down with renowned maritime archaeologist Dr Bruno Werz, FSA, to explore one of the most overlooked turning points in South African history: the wreck of the Haarlem in Table Bay, and its profound connection to the origins of the Cape Coloured community.

But before the conversation even reaches the Haarlem, the episode opens with a haunting question:

What lies buried beneath Cape Town itself?

Beneath the Castle of Good Hope.
Beneath the Grand Parade.
Beneath the Golden Acre.

Through archaeology, archival records, and forgotten histories, Dr Werz takes us beneath the modern city and into the layered worlds hidden below its streets — shipwrecks, burial grounds, trade routes, lost shorelines, and the earliest encounters between Indigenous communities and European arrivals.

Part historical investigation, this episode traces how a single shipwreck became a civilisational pivot point anchored in Table Bay.
