Come take a closer look....

"Ambling across the tabletop is an invigorating and awe-inspiring experience, one, that reminds me of the deep pride and wonder I hold for this natural landscape. The shifting expressions of biodiversity, alongside the epic vistas, have the power to momentarily still the heart.

How can one not feel gratitude for the space we find ourselves in—this abundant, diverse landscape—and the opportunity to honour such beauty?

Through my work, I aim to interpret the landscape by reflecting its diversity, subtle nuances, and moments of grandeur. Using natural elements foraged locally (though not from Table Mountain itself), I recreate and print patterns and marks observed in the environment. These are then collaged into my artworks, forming a tapestry of textures and impressions. In this process, I create a visual language that connects me to a specific moment in time, inviting a dialogue between material, memory, and the ever-shifting landscape."

Art on the Mountain opens on 7 May 2026 (6pm) at 33BREE.

Step into a collection of works created on Table Mountain, where light, landscape, and fynbos come together through the eyes of 45 artists. This is a rare opportunity to experience the mountain in a completely new way.

I’m proud to be part of this exhibition and would love for you to join us for the opening.

Thank you to for initiating and driving this project and for curating the exhibition. 🙏

Opening at Suidoosterfees and continuing at 33BREE, in collaboration with The Artists Gallery, from 8 – 30 May 2026.

Although my art practice has changed, I still make time each year to create a few of my protea / fynbos paintings. They are where I started and hold a nostalgic space for me. I also find them quite settling to paint, when I'm pushing my boundaries into unknown artistic territory.

Art on the Mountain continues…
What began as a seven-week creative journey on the summit of Table Mountain in collaboration with the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway is growing into something even more meaningful. In October and November 2025, 65 of us South African artists joined Hermien van der Merwe in her “studio in the sky,” creating work inspired by the extraordinary mountain and fynbos landscape surrounding them.

Now, in 2026, we are excited to bring this body of work into two upcoming group exhibitions:

• Suidoosterfees | 29 April – 3 May | Artscape

• 33BREE (In collaboration with The Artists Gallery) | Cape Town CBD | 7 to 30 May 2026

These exhibitions celebrate not only the artworks created, but the shared experience of making art within one of South Africa’s most iconic natural environments.

We would love for you to join us as Art on the Mountain continues its journey from the summit into the gallery space.

Remission baby!
A few weeks ago, I went for my annual CT Scan and am delighted to share that I am 1 year in remission. I struggle with brining this to my social media art platform, but it is so much a part of my life (and my art expression) that I feel I need to express the highs and lows of survivorship. After my 6-month chemo treatment which ended in Feb 2024, I have a day-long immunotherapy infusion once every 8 weeks for 2 years in order to limit its reoccurrence. I am currently in my second year of immunotherapy, so still deeply governed by this time schedule and side-effects.
There is a complex and emotional terrain a survivor walks post active treatment (active treatment means the treatment plan of chemo, radiation or surgery). Once this phase is completed, you are thrust into an un-held space, one that is discombobulating in all its complexities of emotions – relief, fear, joy, anxiety, gratitude, more fear, scananxiety, delight (often felt all in one day) – its multifaceted and personal and, I find, often difficult to articulate. I have been living into this space and finding myself grappling more so as the distance between active treatment grows. Greater fatigue, less ability to juggle daily stresses, less emotional and social availability, unwanted physical side effects and the great ‘what if it returns. ’ Although I feel inspired by life, I am struggling to find inspiration in my art practice.

However, I’ll focus on some positive aspects too – I’m definitely less worried about small things, loving every special moment with my family and friends, greater appreciation for so many things, noticing golden joys in the everyday, a much deeper kindness to myself, an appreciation of my strength, a giggling delight in being active and showing up to a gym class, enjoying simplicity and slowing down somewhat.

I am grateful and appreciate the care and concern shown to me, yet sometimes it easier just to say I’m fine, I’m well (– which I really am most of the time 😊), than express the tidal well of emotions that flutter below the surface. Yet I want to express, it really does mean so much when you ask and check in – so thank you

Recently, I was reminded how important it is to reflect on your why.
Why am I painting this way now? Why this subject matter? Why didn’t I follow a path like hyper-realism? Why do I feel the need to express myself like this—why, why, why?

I’m continually reminded of how much the land means to me: a source of inspiration, solace, connection with friends, and moments of profound awe—ranging from the intimate to the expansive. It is a grounding force we all deeply need, one I seek and crave regularly. Quiet, contemplative walks reconnect me with myself; animated conversations with friends connect me to others. But it is the presence of natural spaces that holds these moments and infuses them with awe.

I’m grateful to have recognized this need, and I feel a growing urgency to express how indebted I am to the landscapes around me. My work is abstract, yet deeply rooted in these places—spaces that embed themselves into my core. I hope this work gently encourages you to seek out the places that help you feel grounded and connected to yourself.
