Irma Stern: 'A Life of Displacement: Looking closer to home'

The second exhibition in our four-part collaboration with the Irma Stern Trust and Nedbank, this exhibition explores Stern’s return to Africa and the journeys that shaped her artistic vision.

Travelling through what is now known as Kwa-Zulu Natal, Swaziland (Eswatini) and the Transkei between 1922 and the mid-1930s, Stern worked directly from the landscape and communities she encountered, creating charcoal studies, gouaches, sketches, paintings and sculpture.

'Looking closer to home' offers a closer look at this important body of work and Stern’s unique perspective between Europe and Africa.

Now on view at Norval Foundation.

Born in Durban in 1965 and based in Cape Town, Kate Gottgens is known for her colour-saturated and psychologically charged paintings, moving between figuration and abstraction.

Her work explores the space between memory and imagination, familiarity and estrangement, beauty and unease.

Join us for The Norval Exchange: Artist in Dialogue on 22 October, where Kate Gottgens shares insights from 'Unsteady Realms', in conversation with Sean O’Toole and Jacqui Peffers. For more details & tickets: https://www.webtickets.co.za/v2/event.aspx?itemid=1599906869

In Gallery 7 of "Brett Murray: WILD LIFE", the artist turns his attention inward, exploring empathy, vulnerability and the quiet complexities of life.

Created during and following the COVID-19 pandemic, these intimate animal sculptures emerged from a period of confinement, limited studio access and uncertainty. The monkeys appear suspended in moments of waiting, anxiety and reflection, their stillness inviting us to pause and consider our own experiences.
