Two landscapes. Two quiet moments in the South African countryside.

These two works by Nico Jansen van Rensburg explore the landscape through atmosphere, light and suggestion rather than precise detail.

In the first, a solitary tree rises above a small rural homestead, softened by a hazy blue-grey sky and reflected in the water below. The scene feels intimate and contemplative, as though caught in a fleeting moment between weather and light.

The second opens onto a broader rural landscape, where a large tree anchors the horizon and a narrow path leads the eye through fields, fencing and modest farm structures. Warmer earth tones contrast beautifully with the cool atmospheric sky.

A South African landscape reduced to its most powerful elements: sky, mountain, veld and light.

Emile Cronje gives this expansive landscape a distinctly contemporary energy. Broad strokes of blue, ochre, rust and muted green build a scene where the vast Karoo-like horizon meets a small, almost solitary farmstead. The sweeping clouds dominate the sky, while the scattered vegetation across the foreground creates a remarkable sense of depth and space.

Born in 1967, Emile Cronje is a South African artist whose work reflects a strong connection to the country's landscape and its distinctive light. The son of renowned South African impressionist Gawie Cronje, he has developed his own expressive visual language, using colour and simplified forms to capture the character of the South African countryside.

This acrylic is particularly compelling for its balance between abstraction and recognition. The landscape is immediately familiar, yet Cronje's bold colour relationships and graphic treatment transform it into something more interpretive.

Where the mountains meet the farm.

In Mountains 505c, Hentie Meyer brings together the elements that have become closely associated with his South African landscape painting: expansive mountains, rural farm buildings, open country and the changing light of the landscape.

Born in 1940, Meyer has been a professional artist for more than four decades and is recognised for his naturalistic approach and his ability to capture light across South African landscapes.

There is something wonderfully unhurried about this scene. The farm roads lead the eye towards the mountains, while the soft atmospheric haze gives the landscape a sense of depth and distance. It is recognisably South African, yet quietly timeless.

There is something timeless about red roses. In this still life, F.A. Scotty brings them together with a warmth and painterly sensitivity that makes the flowers feel almost within reach.

F.A. Scotty was the pseudonym of Italian-born South African artist Titta Fasciotti (1927–1993), who studied at the Accademia Carrara di Belle Arti in Bergamo before moving to South Africa. His work included landscapes, seascapes, still lifes and figurative subjects, with oil painting central to his practice.

This work, **Red Roses**, is an oil painting measuring **44 × 34 cm**, offered at **R7,500**. A quietly elegant piece for a collection, and a reminder that sometimes the simplest subject carries the greatest presence.

PIERNEEF, TAKE TWO.

So, Pierneef has arrived in 2026.

And Cape Town, being Cape Town, has apparently decided to give the man more material than any sensible painter could possibly handle.

There is the harbour, all working boats, ropes, rust, yellow paint and cold Atlantic water. There is the cable car hanging over the mountain like some improbable piece of engineering. There is Bo-Kaap, throwing colour into the landscape with the kind of confidence no art director could manufacture. And then there is the road along the Twelve Apostles, where the mountain simply drops into the sea and dares you to look away.

This is the thing about South Africa.

You don't really need to invent drama here. The place has already done the hard work.

A lesser painter might chase the postcard. Pierneef would chase the structure beneath it. The geology. The light. The strange collision between ancient mountain and modern city. The human mess at the foot of something that has been standing there for millions of years.

And perhaps that is what makes imagining Pierneef as a millennial so entertaining.

Give him a cable car, a fishing harbour, a city of colour, a winding coastal road and a phone full of photographs.

Then get out of his way.

Because the man knew the landscape.

And Cape Town, in 2026, would have given him one hell of a canvas.

There is something quietly special about finding several very different artists gathered together in one collection. At a great price as well! (All these paintings have been marked down by 50%) see below.

Munro’s landscapes speak through colour, texture and a wonderfully direct treatment of the natural world. His distinctive use of builders’ trowels helped shape the tactile character for which his work became known, while landscape remained one of the recurring subjects within his extensive body of work.

Sandi Beukes takes us somewhere more intimate. Her Provence pastel captures the romance of European street life through architecture, café tables and small encounters between people. Beukes has long drawn inspiration from the French and Italian countryside, as well as the cafés and streets of Europe.

Corry Larson’s paintings bring another kind of energy: streets filled with colour, movement, architecture and people. The two works in this collection have an immediacy that rewards looking closely, from the expressive handling of the buildings to the small human stories unfolding within each scene.

And then there is At Botha, with a distinctly South African sense of place. His coastal landscapes are characterised by simplified forms, strong colour and an unmistakable affection for the landscape and people of the Cape. Botha is a self-taught artist whose career moved from the performing arts into painting, eventually leading him to Paternoster, where he established his own gallery.

Otto Klar (1908–1994)

There is a quiet, almost cinematic stillness to Otto Klar’s landscapes. Born in Vienna and trained at the Wiener Kunstakademie, Klar brought a European painterly discipline to his adopted South African landscape. After arriving in South Africa in 1939, he settled in Pretoria, where he continued to paint and teach, becoming particularly known for his landscapes, seascapes and still lifes.

This intimate village scene reveals his particular sensitivity to atmosphere and place. A broad, unhurried road draws the eye into a cluster of whitewashed dwellings and weathered thatched roofs, while small figures animate the foreground. Above them, a softly layered sky creates a delicate counterpoint to the warm earth and restrained architecture below.

Klar’s handling is confident without becoming overstated. The landscape is observed with clarity, yet retains the poetry of memory: a rural world reduced to light, colour, structure and human presence.

An original work by an important Austrian-born South African artist, whose paintings remain represented in collections including the Pretoria Art Museum, Durban Art Gallery and Witwatersrand Art Museum.

Daar is ’n besondere teerheid in ’n Claerhout. Die figure is nooit bloot figure nie. Hulle dra iets mensliks, iets broos, iets wat tussen herinnering en verbeelding bly leef.

In hierdie gemengde-medium werk ontvou ’n wêreld van sagte bloues, losgetekende vorme en warmer aardse kleure. Die spontane lyne gee die komposisie ’n byna musikale ritme, terwyl die ligte, deursigtige lae ’n gevoel van beweging en herinnering skep.

Waar goeie wyn geskink word, word stories gebore. Waar kuns leef, vind daardie stories 'n tuiste.

Op 27 Augustus verwelkom Kunssinnig Art Gallery en Beproef vir Liam van De Meye Wine Estate vir 'n aand waar elke glas 'n verhaal vertel en elke slukkie getuig van die grond waaruit dit gebore is.

Soos Jacob Hendrik Pierneef die stilte van die Suid-Afrikaanse landskap vasgevang het, en Gregoire Boonzaier die siel van gewone mense op doek verewig het, dra elke bottel De Meye ook die karakter van sy oorsprong. Dit is 'n viering van vakmanskap, geduld en die kuns om iets buitengewoons te skep.
