AITY Gallery The aim of the gallery is to give focus to artists with fresh ideas whilst still holding true to craftsmanship.

Contemporary Art gallery and consultant Art in the Yard is situated in Franschhoek, just off the main road down a cobbled stream lined path in a picturesque courtyard. The space is versatile, bright and inspiring set over two levels with incredible views of Franschhoek. The aim of the gallery is to give focus to artists with fresh ideas whilst still holding true to skilled craftsmanship. Art is se

lected from upcoming, local and international artists. The artists we exhibit are, Vanessa Berlein, John Catlin, Johannes Du Plessis, Galia Gluckman, Francois Irvine, Craig Ivor, Varenka Paschke, Lindsay Patton, Richard Scott, Frans Smit, Alexandra Spyratos, and new comers, Mia Hohls and Liezel Goosen. Art in the Yard was born from a number of serendipitous moments and meetings of artists and space. The gallerist Georgia Eccles Schoeman started her first art business in 2002, exporting collections of South African art by established and immerging artists to the UK. There the works were exhibited at pop up exhibitions organized by Georgia across London, art fairs and also at other galleries, notably Stephanie Hoppen Gallery, Walton Street, London a relationship that still exists today. That business turned into an agency representing several Cape Town based artists due to the difficulties of traveling back and forth to London. The Art world took a little back seat for a few years while Georgia concentrated on a fashion retail store called Indian Summer which brought her to Franschhoek. She always was on the look -out for a space to start her own gallery, and after a few years the timing was right, its present premises became available and this inspired Georgia to connect with her old art connections and a few new artists and Art in the yard was born.

Nicole Pieter’s work explores deeply personal themes of identity and nervous system regulation, framed through the lens of lived experience and resilience. A recurring narrative within her practice is their experience with hyperhidrosis, a condition that informs her choice of methods, materials and conceptual grounding. The works presented in Chapter 3 continue her ongoing exploration of colour, gesture and bodily presence, within blank contemplative spaces. Pieter aims to articulate the transition between layered emotional states by employing loose, vivid pigments and tactile imprints sparsely upon the surface of her artworks.

Through a distinctive visual language of text, caricature, and fragmented referential narrative, Nano Le Face interrogates contemporary culture with his post-pop drawings. Rendered in coloured pencil and wax crayon, these playfully intimate scenes navigate themes of vanity, consumerism, and emotional spectacle. Exposing the uneasy tension between glamour and vulnerability that defines the digital age.

Kelly John Gough’s works for Chapter 3 explore the migration of stories across literature, cinema, and painting. Reworking film stills, Gough suspends narrative in a single moment - honing in on the space between memory, image, and interpretation and re-interpretation.

Bold, instinctive, and unapologetically human - new text works by Kyle Jardine for Chapter 13 at AITY Gallery, Franschhoek.

Built through thick layers of acrylic and spray paint, Jardine’s signature impasto surfaces transform simple phrases into emotional declarations. Raw texture, saturated colour, and hand-painted typography become part of Jardine’s distinct visual language, turning words into living, tactile objects.

AITY Gallery, Franschhoek, is pleased to announce Chapter 3, a group exhibition opening this Friday, during the Franschhoek Literary Festival weekend, 15 May 2026 to 17 June 2026. The third in an ongoing series of themed group shows, Chapter 3 brings together a group of South African artists whose work engages, each in its own way, the universe of the written word. Ranging from the intimate to the monumental - paintings, sculpture, and works on paper, all united by a quality of attention to what image and language can do when they meet. Timed to coincide with one of the country’s most celebrated cultural weekends, Chapter 3 invites viewers into a space where art and literature intertwine.

“I believe that in every brush stroke an artist’s life is depicted, that every mark put to canvas represents a lifetime of experiences imprinted silently into its shape and form, a soul whisper, a personal presence carried through the energy and the heart of the art. This silent dialogue of expression through creativity is my drive and inspiration and has contributed to a lifetime of painting.”

Bold, textured and instinctively wild, the work of Alexandra Spyratos channels the heat and spirit of African wildlife. Through layered surfaces of metals and luminous pigment, Spyratos captures the pulse of the natural world.
