Young Voices Inspire at Genadendal Museum Speech Competition
The Genadendal Mission Museum came alive with youthful energy and thoughtful debate on Friday, 22 May 2026, as learners from Emil Weder High School participated in the first round of the Museum English School Speech Competition in celebration of International Museums Day.
Inspired by the theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” learners delivered heartfelt speeches on the importance of heritage, understanding and bringing people together. Their confidence, insight and passion demonstrated the important role young people play in shaping a more inclusive future.
Grade 10 learner Cailey Fourie claimed first place, followed by Raywena Arnoldus in second place and Rivonia Olivier in third.
The competition was a celebration not only of public speaking, but of young voices willing to engage with the challenges and opportunities of the world around them.
The museum extends its sincere appreciation to the adjudicators, Ms Erika Schullenberg, Ms Odette Weir and Mr Shaun Linders, for their time, expertise and encouragement. Special thanks are also extended to the Friends of the Genadendal Mission Museum for generously sponsoring the event and investing in opportunities that empower young people. Through initiatives such as these, the museum continues to create opportunities for young people to learn, grow and be heard.
