Young Voices Inspire at Genadendal Museum Speech Competition

The Genadendal Mission Museum came alive with youthful energy and thoughtful debate on Friday, 22 May 2026, as learners from Emil Weder High School participated in the first round of the Museum English School Speech Competition in celebration of International Museums Day.

Inspired by the theme, “Museums Uniting a Divided World,” learners delivered heartfelt speeches on the importance of heritage, understanding and bringing people together. Their confidence, insight and passion demonstrated the important role young people play in shaping a more inclusive future.

Grade 10 learner Cailey Fourie claimed first place, followed by Raywena Arnoldus in second place and Rivonia Olivier in third.

The competition was a celebration not only of public speaking, but of young voices willing to engage with the challenges and opportunities of the world around them.

The museum extends its sincere appreciation to the adjudicators, Ms Erika Schullenberg, Ms Odette Weir and Mr Shaun Linders, for their time, expertise and encouragement. Special thanks are also extended to the Friends of the Genadendal Mission Museum for generously sponsoring the event and investing in opportunities that empower young people. Through initiatives such as these, the museum continues to create opportunities for young people to learn, grow and be heard.

⚒️ “We have done what was our duty to do.” – Luke 17:10

The artisans of early Genadendal may never have imagined that their humble daily labour would one day become part of South Africa’s heritage story. Yet centuries later, their tools, copperware and craftsmanship remain powerful reminders of service, dedication and skill.

Missionary Johann Kuhnel reportedly crafted a church bell from brass sheets as early as 1797, while Daniel Beinbrecht became the first fully qualified coppersmith to settle in Genadendal in 1816.

Not every masterpiece carried a signature. But every object carried purpose.

Visit the Genadendal Mission Museum and discover the quiet legacy of the hands that helped build a community.
