✨ Artist of the Week: Nomsa Ngidi ✨
This week, part of our beautiful collection of The Spirit of The Green Coast exhibition, we celebrate Nomsa Ngidi, whose vibrant paintings explore culture, spirituality, community and our connection to the land.
*Women crossing Mbashe River*
At first glance the painting only depicts three women approaching and entering a river. When viewing through the lens of cultural practice, the scene suggests something far more significant than an ordinary journey to the water.
The woman in the yellow cape, carrying a stick, she appears to be a leader and spiritual guide. The figure on the right bending towards the water is beginning her cleansing, while the woman in red wants behind for her turn. Their position creates a sense of order and patience.
The river therefore becomes more than part of the landscape but a sacred space. This work offers a glimpse into the connection of beliefs and practices to women rural communities and their relationships with nature.
*Women in the Village*
In this work three women stand prominently in the foreground, dressed in richly detailed and colourful traditional attire. It is however a mystery, if they are leaving or arriving at their homestead.
Their positioning gives the figures a strong sense of presence and dignity, placing cultural identity at the centre of the composition. Their intricate beadwork and patterns become visual expressions of heritage, individuality and continuity.
The landscape is not simply a backdrop, it becomes part of the women’s identity, implies a relationship between ancestry and land. The work celebrates the people who give meaning and character to the places they call home.
*Kwa Sitoba Village*
The painting presents a peaceful rural village spread across a lush, rolling landscape. At first glance, it appears to be a simple depiction of the environment, but the arrangement of the homes suggests a deeper sense of equality and unity within the community.
The repetition of the same structured homes can be interpreted of togetherness, where each household forms part of a larger, connected community.
This work evokes peace and collective belonging.
Together, these works by Nomsa Ngidi explore themes of spirituality, community, culture and belonging. Ngidi works primarily in oil on canvas, using rich colour and layered landscapes to bring her scenes to life. Her works range from medium to large-scale canvases, approximately 1000 × 760 mm (A1), allowing the viewer to engage closely with the figures, homes and expansive environments within each composition. Her prices are now negotiable!✨
