Did you know that Kings Grant Country Retreat was originally a mission food supply farm built by Trappist Monks in 1896. In the year 2000, this old mission farm was bought from Mariannhill Monestary (Catholic) by the neighbouring Biggs family and restored into a place to visit, stay, explore, retreat and eat.

When it was still a mission farm, the nuns and women staff stayed in the accommodation closest to the Dairy and what is now the reception and restaurant area. The Brothers and mission men stayed in accommodation on the otherside of St Isidore Chapel.

Here are 3 of our rooms that originally formed part of the Mission Women staff sleeping quarters. No.3 was originally the staff kitchen for both the women and men farm staff. 2 great big pots would boil away here, one for putu and one for a cabbage or bean stew of sorts and occassionally for beef, chicken and pork. The edging in the room was used as staff seating. You can find these old pots in the restaurant now, on the deck that have been transformed into unique coffee tables!

Our rooms are all different and with a different history. Generally the standard rooms are smaller and with some old school features like a shower over bath. Our premium rooms are more spacious and often come with features such as a fire place, bath and shower, fridges, kitchenettes and so on. It's simple and comfortable here, just as it was intended by the Trappists.

The Trappist Garden....this is our new vegetarian dish. Arancini 3 ways with seasonal vegetables. The Arancini fillings are Feta, lemon and thyme/ Mushroom, sage and mozzarella/ Goats cheese, sundried tomatoes and rosemary.

Our restaurant hours have recently changed. We're open 3 nights of the week now: Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night.

Do you know that every Friday, Art Club happens on the deck from 11am onwards?

It's casual, very relaxed and for anyone who simply enjoys being creative. Erika Bakeberg started the club at KG over a year ago now.

How it works is the group usually focuses on learning a new skill or Erika chooses a theme for that month. Or you can simply bring what ever you are working on and come to KG for a.social afternoon with fellow creatives!

Bring your own materials...though Kings Grant does have an art cupboard with limited art materials for sale should you need.

From this week, Saint Isidore's Restaurant is open to the public every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday night until 7.30pm.
