The site of the notorious Old Fort prison, Number 4 prison, Womens Gaol, & the home of the Constitutional Court of South Africa. Nowhere can the story of South Africa's turbulent past and its extraordinary transition to democracy be told as it is at Constitution Hill. Constitution Hill is a national heritage site situated in the Johannesburg CBD and is home to the Constitutional Court of South Afr

ica– the highest court in the country on constitutional matters. Once a place of injustice and brutality, where South Africa’s leading political activists, including Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Gandhi, were detained, the site has been transformed into a place of solidarity and democracy, home to the Women’s Gaol museum, Number Four Museum, and Old Fort Museum. Apart from its engaging and gripping exhibitions, Constitution Hill is also open to the public for guided tours and has become an important platform for Heritage, Education, and Tourism related programmes. The vast variety of programmes hosted at Constitution Hill enable us to embrace current issues, celebrate days of national significance, address matters of public interest and create a forum for public debate. With its rich history and character Constitution Hill boasts of ideal platforms to educate and learn about South Africa's story. ConHill, as it is famously known, also offers a variety of multipurpose venues, suitable for conferencing, performances, a large array of events and for public activities and programmes.

The Soweto Uprising didn’t begin on June 16, 1976—it was the culmination of a deep, growing consciousness long before young people took to the streets.
Before The Bell Rang deconstructs the classic school uniform to tell this story. Created by emerging designers under The Internship by David Tlale and photographed on site at Constitution Hill, the collection uses disrupted silhouettes and symbolic motifs—like barbed wire and displaced ties—to explore the tension between discipline, rebellion, and freedom.

Did you know?

On 5 September 1909, Dr. Yusuf Mohamed Dadoo — a tireless champion for national and social liberation — was born in Krugersdorp, Johannesburg.
A visionary leader, Dadoo worked to unite oppressed Indian, African, and Coloured communities in the fight against apartheid. His family's roots in South Africa trace back to the 1890s, just decades after the first Indian indentured labourers arrived.

Dadoo's legacy is one of non-racialism, internationalism, socialism, and the deep fight for justice — shaping South Africa's liberation movement across generations.

Did you know? The Constitutional Court stands as a beacon of hope at the heart of Constitution Hill.

Surrounded by former prisons, its modern design symbolizes transformation. Inspired by lekgotla — a traditional African space for justice under a tree — the Court reflects openness, unity, and human rights.
Located near the Flame of Democracy, it opened on Human Rights Day (21 March 2004).

Outside, you’ll find all 12 official languages, including Sign Language and Braille — a powerful tribute to inclusion and diversity.
Come see it for yourself by booking a tour today!

We wrapped up Women’s Month with a powerful 70th Commemoration Dialogue at the historic Women’s Jail, Constitution Hill, in partnership with the Department of Justice and Constitutional Development and We The People SA.

Bringing together civil society organizations, educators, youth, and leaders across generations, the dialogue focused on the critical issues affecting women today moving beyond discussions to actionable solutions.

The day featured inspiring performances by the Positive Vibrations Foundation of Hope for Girls, alongside key remarks from:

Ms. Leah Mabusela – Acting CEO, Constitution Hill
Mr. Andries Nel, MP – Deputy Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development
Ms. Tshidiso Lencoasa – Budget Analyst, SECTION 27
Busisiwe Nxumalo – Board Member, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA)

A facilitated panel featuring representatives from the Legal Practice Council (LPC), the Commission for Gender Equality (CGE), and the Department of Women, Youth and Persons with Disabilities led critical reflections on justice and equality, followed by an interactive educational quiz on women's rights hosted by the ConHill Education Team.

Here is a look back at the dialogue and engagement at ConHill!
