JOZI aMUSE DAY 1 (ROUTE B) HIGHLIGHTS: HISTORY, MEMORY & JUSTICE 🏛️✨

What happens when history steps out of the textbook and comes alive before your eyes?

Day 1 of JOZI aMUSE invited participants to a fascinating museum journey through City of Joburg, every stop revealed a different chapter of our collective story. From powerful exhibitions and guided tours to thought provoking conversations and moments of reflection, the experience brought history, memory and justice into sharp focus.

Participants explored the Ditsong National Museum of Cultural History, engaged with the moving archives and exhibitions at the Johannesburg Holocaust & Genocide Centre, discovered the healing-centred work of A42 House Museum for Creative Repair, and walked the historic grounds of the Con Court Art collection & the Constitution Hill (South Africa) Human Rights Precinct, the number four notorious former prison for black male and one of South Africa’s most important symbols of democracy and human rights.

Museum tours offer more than a day out. They create opportunities for young people to learn from the past, for families to connect through shared experiences, and for communities to better understand the people, events and ideas that shaped the country we live in today. They inspire curiosity, encourage dialogue and remind us that history is not something behind us, it lives among us every day.

Take a look at some of the highlights from an incredible first day as JOZI aMUSE continues to celebrate the stories, memories and cultural treasures that make Johannesburg one of Africa’s most vibrant cities.

As South Africa commemorates the 50th Anniversary of the Soweto Uprising, EMBO returns as a powerful tribute to the ideas, courage and consciousness that shaped a generation. This year’s edition honours Muziwakhe Anton Lembede, one of the founding intellectual voices of African nationalism, through a unique blend of music, poetry, history and dialogue.

Join us on 6 June 2026 at Soweto Theatre for a day of reflection, learning and cultural celebration as we revisit the stories of resistance, identity, liberation and Pan-African thought that continue to influence South Africa today.

If you miss EMBO, you’ll miss an opportunity to engage with a living legacy, connect with powerful African-centred storytelling, and be part of a meaningful commemoration marking one of the most important milestones in our country’s history.
