A little appreciation post 🫶

A very special thank you to Desray and her husband, Deeren, owners of Novichem in Darling, for their kindness during this past week.

Desray reached out to me on WhatsApp and asked if they could donate cleaning supplies to help us after the flood, and it truly made such a big difference to us.

People don’t always realise how much even a “small” donation means during times like this, but every bit of kindness helps more than you know.

What makes this even more special is that Novichem is a small business themselves and they are opening this Friday! As our curator told Desiree: good things happen to good people - and they are definitely 1000% good people.

Thank you so much, you guys. We appreciate it more than words can say, and we wish you all the best for your opening 🤍

SUPPORT THEM! 🙌

Hi everyone!

Just a little check-in from us here at the museum.

We're okay. Tired, overwhelmed some days, but okay! We are moving forward, one day at a time.

We have had so many people asking questions about what happened, what the situation looks like now, and how things are going, so we thought we'd hop on here and answer some of the most frequently asked questions.

1. “Is the municipality actually helping?”

A big fat YES.

One of the most frustrating things we have heard this past week has been people asking, “Where is the municipality?” or “What are they even doing?”

Let me tell you - from the very first day of cleanup, when the museum was honestly still in complete chaos, the municipality has been there for us!!

Not a single day has gone by without someone from the municipality helping in some way. They have cleaned bathrooms and walkways, brought sandbags, moved heavy items, assisted with practical things, and helped the curator keep going when things literally felt impossible.

Honestly, we don’t even know how we would have managed without them. They have helped us immensely, and we are incredibly grateful.

2. “Are the Maggie Laubser paintings okay?”

Yes, they are!

The paintings were our absolute top priority on the night of the flood, and thankfully they were the first - and honestly the only things we managed to save quickly.

The team came to collect the paintings the very next day, and we are very relieved to say they are completely safe and unharmed.

They are 100% okay. (phew)

3. “How can we help?”

Right now, we are taking things one day at a time. We don’t even really have a structured plan to be honest.. Most mornings start with a strong cup of coffee and simply figuring out what needs to happen next.

So at this stage, there isn’t one specific way to help.

But, as difficult as it is to say, the reality is that financial support is probably the biggest help right now. We are facing a veeeeery long road ahead, and every bit truly helps more than you know.

Lastly, thank you.

Thank you to every single person who has popped in to say hello, helped us clean, sent messages, checked in, or simply showed kindness.

You have no idea how much the small things have meant this week. Even someone arriving with a simple McDonald’s coffee has genuinely made our day.

We have felt so supported, and we are unbelievably grateful.

We truly believe something good will come from this, even if we can’t fully see it yet. For now, we’re just showing up every day, working hard, and taking it step by step.

Thank you for walking this journey with us!

Dear friends,

As many of you may already know, the museum unfortunately suffered significant damage during Monday’s storm. We are deeply saddened and heartbroken by what has happened, especially as we truly felt that the museum had just begun thriving again. At the moment, it feels as though we are back at square one.

Before anything else, we would like to sincerely thank everyone who immediately came to the rescue on Monday evening. Thank you to our curator, our treasurer Johan, and his better half, Sally Anne, head of our Forest School initiative, for jumping in without hesitation. Thank you as well to Mr. Stefan Walters, Tannie Flora our dearly beloved cleaner, who left her other work to come and help, and especially the two strangers who appeared out of nowhere to help us in our time of need. We never got your names, but please know that your kindness meant more than words can say.

We would also like to express our immense gratitude to the Swartland Municipality. From Tuesday morning onward, teams were already on site assisting the curator and helping us begin the enormous cleanup process. Your support has not gone unnoticed, and we appreciate it deeply.

To everyone who has visited, sent messages, checked in on us, and asked how they can help - thank you. Seeing how much people care about the museum has been incredibly moving during such a difficult time.

Unfortunately, the museum will be closed until further notice while we work to recover from the damage. At this stage, we honestly do not know how long the process will take, but we remain hopeful that we will soon be able to reopen our doors and continue doing what we love most.

Several people have asked how they can help. At this time, the greatest need is financial assistance to help cover cleaning costs, equipment hire, cleaning supplies, and restoration efforts. We are in need of items such as pressure cleaners, leaf blowers, vacuum cleaners, mops, brooms, and other cleaning materials, as well as funds to help us get back on our feet.

The saddest part is that some of the museums historical artifacts were also damaged, and certain pieces may never be fully restored. These are irreplacable pieces of history, and that loss truly breaks our hearts.

For anyone who would like to contribute, donations can kindly be made to the following bank account:

Thank you again for your kindness, support, and understanding during this very difficult time.

With gratitude,
Malmesbury Museum

Yesterday marked something very special!

The 14th of April would have been 140 years since the birth of Maggie Laubser - and what a way to celebrate it.

We are incredibly excited to officially open the Maggie Laubser exhibition at the Malmesbury Museum. This is a first for our museum, and even for our town!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this possible:

Mr Deon Olivier, for starting it all
Mr Stefan Hundt from the Sanlam Art Collection
Mrs Susan Stofberg for all the help
Swartland Winery & Darling Creamery for keeping us refreshed

This exhibition will be here for a while - so watch this space! You are warmly invited to come and experience it.

Please note: Entry during the exhibition is a minimum donation of R20.

Day 2 & 3: WILDLIFE, FIRE & FOREST MAGIC 🦜🔥🌿

Two joy-filled days of nature, creativity, and connection! We started with calm, mindful mornings, listening to the sounds around us and continuing to care for our environment by clearing litter along the way 💚

The children expressed themselves beautifully through making bird feeders, decorating the trees, and engaging in imaginative play. There was also focused, hands-on tool work, encouraging confidence and practical skills 💪

Food was a highlight too - snacks like popcorn, peaches, and bananas, hands-on French toast making, and of course s’mores, tea, and cookies to end the day on a sweet note 😊

Our forest adventure brought even more excitement, with rock climbing, creating a nature rainbow, and an egg hunt in the blue gum forest. The day also included water play and a meaningful visit to the museum, where we explored the history of the Swartland!

We ended with shared reflection, where the children spoke about what they’ve learned and what they feel proud of - such special, thoughtful moments 🫶

Overall, a beautiful blend of adventure, creativity, teamwork, and learning through play ❤️🧡💛💚🩵💙💜🩷

A HUGE thank you to Jaco Basson for his generous grass donation!! The museum’s front is already looking greener, neater, and more welcoming! 🤩

And a very big shoutout as well to the Swartland Municipality Parks & Gardens team! 👏 They went above and beyond preparing and levelling the ground, working through the intense heat last week, and dedicating nearly a full week to get everything just right. Your constant support and eagerness to help NEVER go unnoticed! ❤️
