WC MUSEUM SPEECH COMPETITION PART 3 | SPEAKER MOMENTS

In celebration of International Museum Day and this year’s ICOM theme β€” Museums Uniting a Divided World β€” our speakers were challenged to use their voices to creatively explore and critique the role of museums as spaces of cultural exchange, enrichment, understanding, and cooperation.

Each contestant took to the stage with their cue cards, their personality, and their unique interpretation of one of this year’s six official themes. 𐦂𖨆π€ͺπ– ‹

🎀 CULTURE & UNDERSTANDING | How museums can help develop respect and empathy.
🎀 HISTORY, MEMORY & HEALING | How museums can encourage honest reflection on the past.

WC MUSEUM SPEECH COMPETITION - PART 2 | THE SCHOOL GROUPS

🎀 Each year, local schools are invited to enter contestants in Grades 10–12 for Round 1 of the ICOM Speech Competition.

This year, five schools were represented, with each school entering four contestants:

1. Ashton CP School
2. Ashton Secondary School
3. Bonnievale High School
4. Jakes Gerwel Technical School
5. Langeberg Senior Secondary School

Every learner who took part confidently represented both themselves and their respective schools in this year’s competition.

Watch this space as we introduce the individual contestants and celebrate their speeches over the next few days.

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY IN ACTION AT MONTAGU MUSEUM

Today we had the privilege of welcoming the Grade 6s and 7s from Keisie Primary School to Montagu Museum.

Learners explored our shared heritage, traditional herb lore, the stories of our ancestors, and the history of our museum community space.

Well done to our newly appointed EPWP interns for positively embracing their new roles, and thank you to all local stakeholders and government representatives who shared their knowledge with the learners.

INTERNATIONAL MUSEUM DAY | 18 MAY 2026

This Monday, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) celebrates International Museum Day under the 2026 theme: β€œMuseums Uniting a Divided World.”
This theme highlights the role museums play as spaces of connection, dialogue, and understanding.

🎟️ To mark the occasion, the Montagu Museum is offering free entry on Monday, 18 May 2026.

The museum will also be a hive of activity as we extend this spirit of connection into the wider community through our educational programmes.

Monday - Wednesday, 18-20 May | We’ll be welcoming school groups to explore our exhibitions and discover how museums help connect us to our shared heritage. 𐦂𖨆π€ͺπ– ‹

🎀 Thursday, 21 May | We’ll be hosting our Annual Speech Competition, where high school learners from local schools come together to share their ideas and voices.
