LISTENING TO THE LANDSCAPE

What if environmental data could be heard instead of simply read?

Join us for Julian Reinecke-Watson’s practice-based installation, Composing Ecological Soundscapes of the Garden Route National Park Using Modular Synthesis in Data Sonification, exploring the intersection of ecology, technology and sound art.

Environmental data from South African National Parks — including wildfires, invasive species and climate change — is transformed into sound, creating an immersive and generative auditory experience inspired by the landscapes and wildlife of the Garden Route National Park.

Step beyond numbers and graphs and listen to an ecosystem in motion.

Ever wondered what’s inside the NWU Permanent Art Collection? This is your chance to get a glimpse!

In a world dominated by technology, AI and the constant rush of everyday life, Metanoia invites us to pause, reflect and reconnect with what it means to be human.

Curated by Ashley du Rand, Hannah Finch & Nobuhle Xaba, the exhibition brings together more than 20 artists and artworks from the NWU Permanent Art Collection, including paintings, sculptures and mixed-media works. The exhibition unfolds across three spaces exploring the Body, Soul and Spirit.

UMZILA (The legacy) preserving sound, memory and culture.

As part of the UMZILA (The legacy) exhibition, this conversation invites us to consider what it means to protect and carry cultural knowledge forward ensuring that these traditions continue to be heard, understood and experienced by future generations. How we can preserve not only the instrument itself, but the knowledge, stories and cultural practices carried through it.

UMZILA (The legacy) closes on 11 September. Don’t miss the opportunity to experience the exhibition and engage with the stories it holds.

OPEN CALL | NWU GALLERY 2027–2030

Are you an artist or creative practitioner? This is your invitation to submit exhibition proposals for the NWU Gallery’s 2027–2030 programme.

The call welcomes solo and group exhibitions, emerging to established artists, curators, art historians, collectives, societies and arts organisations.

We are looking for projects that challenge, inspire, spark meaningful dialogue and explore contemporary concerns, with opportunities for exhibitions at the NWU Gallery, Botanical Garden Gallery and outdoor spaces.

If you have a body of work or an exhibition idea that could contribute to conversations around art, culture, knowledge and society, this is an opportunity worth exploring.

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who joined us for the opening of Umzila (The Legacy) and Metanoia exhibition on 12 August.

Your presence, encouragement, conversations, and engagement made the opening incredibly special. It was beautiful to see the works come alive through your eyes and to share these bodies of work with a community that continues to support and inspire the creative journey.

A very special thank you to Thandeka Mfinyongo and her band for an incredible performance that truly brought Uhadi to life. Through their music, audiences were able to experience Uhadi not simply as an instrument, but as a vessel of memory, culture, history and storytelling.

Here’s to art, transformation, memory, music, heritage, and the stories that connect us.

Thank you for witnessing the work. Thank you for experiencing Uhadi. Thank you for being part of the journey.

What an incredible way to wrap up our Uhadi Instrument-Making Workshop!

Day 2 was all about bringing our handcrafted Uhadi instruments to life! Participants put the finishing touches on their instruments before diving into an inspiring musical journey led by Thandeka Mfinyongo. The session introduced participants to the beautiful sounds of the Uhadi, exploring music created with this remarkable instrument and highlighting some of the talented musicians who continue to preserve and celebrate this important cultural tradition.

From there, the excitement only grew! Participants enjoyed an in-depth introduction to playing the Uhadi, learned traditional songs, experimented with different techniques, and even created melodies of their own. The room was filled with curiosity, laughter, creativity, and the unmistakable sound of learning through music.

The energy throughout the two days was truly inspiring. It was wonderful to see such an enthusiastic group of people come together to learn, teach, collaborate, create, and have fun while celebrating South Africa's rich cultural heritage.

A heartfelt thank you to all our participants, artist Thandeka Mfinyongo, and the NWU Gallery team for making this workshop such a memorable success. Your passion, dedication, and willingness to learn made these two days something truly special.

The journey doesn't end here! All the Uhadi instruments created during the workshop will form part of the UMZILA (The Legacy) exhibition, opening on 12 August 2026 at the NWU Gallery.

We can't wait to welcome you to the exhibition and look forward to hosting many more engaging, educational, and fun-filled workshops in the future!
