From Bloemfontein to Bargème. By Kobus de Villiers. A memoir. Well done Kobus.

Same as a novel few will read what he actually wrote. How many notebooks did he fill with scribbles to enable him to write this? The foreign place names, the correct spelling. His musings concerning his National Service in 1971 and subsequent adventures in Browns I didn’t want to read, but I did. The reason because I had been there, done that, got the T-shirt. In the Namib desert is where we met 55 years ago. The most brilliant of his writing are the dreams. In a hospital in East Londen.

To portrait the long term trauma brought on by a Dear Johnny in this manner is quite something. Konrad, The Black Forest in Germany and suddenly war torn Owamboland made me walk on the clouds and laugh at the shadows. Any reader younger than 40 will wonder what the hell.

This memoir is the musing of a brilliant mind also of an artistic sensitive person. In 1973 he could do with a slide rule what few would manage with an upmarket PC in 2026.He also sketched the most stunning bare breasted women with pencil. Every evening after dinner he would walk across the vast lawns, cross Lynnewood road, purchase a litre of coke, a slab of dark chocolate and a packet of Belmont smokes and return to our room in Mopanie Mens Res and study. When he went to bed early the next morning the bottle and packet was empty and the chocolate silver wrapping. Damn he never gained a gram.

My only criticism is getting lost in time. I never knew what year, was it after this or before that.
