A Seat at the Table with Zakes Mda

We had a fantastic afternoon with Zakes Mda at The Viewing Room Art Gallery this past Saturday.

Over refreshments, we enjoyed a wonderful sit-down with Zakes—an afternoon filled with stories, insights and thoughtful conversation.

A true raconteur and orator, Prof. Zakes spoke openly and generously about his inspirations, creative process and techniques. The conversation was intimate, informal and engaging, with guests asking questions and having the opportunity to hear directly from the artist about his work, inspirations and creative journey. He also shared insights into his new book, an authorised biography of Chris Hani, which is due to be published in October.

We are truly thankful to the operatic basso S'ba Zweni, who gifted the exhibition with a song in honour of Zakes Mda.

Meet Zakes Zanemvula Kizito Gatyeni Mda at the opening this Saturday 8th August

Zakes Mda is an acclaimed South African writer, composer, playwright, and visual artist whose multidisciplinary practice brings together storytelling, music, and painting. Drawing inspiration from Johannesburg, the Eastern Cape, Lesotho, and the Appalachian region of the United States, his work explores memory, identity, community, and the complexities of everyday life.

Working across acrylic, oil, collage, printmaking, and found objects, Mda creates richly layered narratives influenced by Basotho mural traditions, Cubism, literature, music, and performance. His work has been exhibited internationally and is held in collections across South Africa, Europe, and the United States.

A celebrated author of more than 30 books and recipient of the Order of Ikhamanga in Silver, Mda continues to build connections between visual art, literature, and lived experience.
