Prince Albert is an oasis in the Great Karoo, where water from springs in the Swartberg mountains runs through the village in furrows, bringing gardens and orchards to life. The first settlers arrived in 1762 and established a farm called de Kweekvallei: Valley of Plenty. By 1845 a little village had sprung up, named after Queen Victoria's consort. Tourism drives our economy and our guest accommodation caters for every taste and pocket. Our restaurants serve Karoo cuisine at reasonable prices. We boast art galleries and studios, community craft outlets, a prize-winning Museum, a weavery, blacksmith and dairy. We regularly hold festivals, including the Plaaskombuisfees in April, the Agricultural Show in October, the Leesfees co-ordinated by the Writers' Guild every November, and Prince Albert Open Studios - a feast of Art arranged by local artists twice a year. Then there are the regular Moonlight Markets offering delicious Karoo cuisine and the Saturday Market for local produce, bric-a-brac, pancakes, bacon rolls and much more. A circular drive across the Swartberg Pass and back through Meiringspoort is a must, as is a trip along the Weltevrede road or out towards the Gamkapoort Dam to watch the sunset, with your sundowners at hand.
