Five editions. A shared continental heritage. One collective responsibility.

The Nelson Mandela Museum is preparing to host the 5th African Liberation Heritage Indaba on 28–29 October 2026 at the University of the Free State, South Campus, Bloemfontein.

This year, we gather in a city whose history is inseparable from the birth of South Africa’s organised liberation movement.

As we approach this important gathering, we invite you to reflect with us on a fundamental question:

Why Bloemfontein?

Because understanding where our liberation movements began is essential to understanding the history we must preserve, the lessons we must carry forward and the legacy we must pass on.

The Nelson Mandela Museum collaborated with the Winnie Madikizela-Mandela Local Municipality and the OR Tambo Garden of Remembrance to host a very successful OR Tambo Children’s Legacy Programme — one of the OR Tambo Month build-up activities.

The programme was supported by various stakeholders and most importantly, school learners who were the VIPs and big winners of the day.

A heartfelt congratulations to all that took part, from iimbongi, book reviews and essay writing competitions.

Out with the old, in with the new! 🇿🇦

Today, the KSD Local Municipality led a street renaming programme.

Some of the streets that were renamed are:
📍 Owen Street (former name) → Lizo Ndzobole Street
📍 York Road (former name) → Dr Laura Mphahlwa Road

The event was led by the Municipality and attended by clergy, affected families, community as well as schools.

THIS WEEK ON OUR PLATE: ULUSU! 🍲

Last week we embarked on a journey of publicising and helping Ms Yondela Mpondokazi Ngqokelela promote her book titled IRESIPHI ZOKUTYA KWESINTU.

This week in our journey, we are exploring one of the recipes in the book: Iindlela Zokupheka Ukutya Kwesintu; to entice your appetite.

First dish is Ulusu — Recipe written by Ntombozuko Matshamba.

1. Izinto zokudibanisa / Ingredients
- Ulusu, 1 and a half kg
- One whole onion, chopped
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 litre water to cook

Two leaders that played pivotal roles in the dawn of democracy.

One was the longest serving President of the MyANCA, Oliver Reginald Tambo; the other was the first democratically elected The Presidency of the Republic of South Africa, Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.

These iconic leaders of our struggle for democracy once shared a law firm on Fox Street, Joburg, which served predominantly Africans.

Their legacies live forever.
