Coming up at our new White River Gallery in Johannesburg, we’re delighted to invite you to the opening of NEXUS this Saturday, 24 October.

We’ve been thinking about how often the worlds of art, architecture and design overlap. Artists who are also designers. Architects who run galleries. Artists involved in shaping spaces from the very beginning.

It’s something we’re keen to explore further, and with 22 artists exhibiting, we’re looking forward to sharing their work and hearing different perspectives on the relationship between art and the spaces we inhabit.

We’d love you to join us.

NEXUS | Intersecting Art, Space & Design
Saturday, 24 October | 12 noon

At what point does an animal begin to lose its sense of self? It’s a question that sits behind Diane Victor’s 𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 - 𝘡𝘰𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴, one of the works that prompted particularly long pauses during the opening of GHOST.

Zoochosis is a term used to describe abnormal, repetitive behaviours observed in some captive animals. Pacing, rocking, swaying. Behaviours associated with the psychological effects of confinement. These animals, Victor observes, “tend to lose a sense of self.”

It’s a particularly poignant connection to the title of the exhibition, GHOST. Here, haunting is not necessarily about what remains after something has disappeared, but what might disappear while something is still physically present.

𝘌𝘭𝘦𝘱𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘙𝘰𝘰𝘮 - 𝘡𝘰𝘰𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘴𝘪𝘴 forms part of GHOST, a trio of solo exhibitions by Diane Victor, Elfriede Dreyer and Emma Willemse, on show at White River Gallery until November 30, 2026.

One of the most powerful photographs from today’s opening of GHOST at White River Gallery.

As the doors were opening and the first visitors arriving, artist Diane Victor was still putting the finishing touches to one of her works.

Her work had a profound effect on visitors today. Some stood in silence, others were moved to tears. There is much to unpack in these extraordinary works, and we’ll be sharing more in the coming days.

But this photograph captures something else. The final moments of creation, just as the work begins its life in the eyes of others.

Diane spoke today about the relationship between the act of making art and the idea of a ghost:

“The mediums I work with … often I’m interested in the ephemerality of materials … Literally, it is catching ghosts because you’re moving the candle, you’re catching the smoke. You have an idea in your head. You could do it in a number of ways, but you extract it through your fingers or through the material and you catch it as a ghost. It’s a ghost of an idea that if you don’t fix down, it’s gone and lost.”

There is something extraordinary about witnessing that moment. An artist fixing the last traces of an idea into something tangible, just as the rest of us arrive to encounter it.

GHOST, a trio of solo exhibitions by Diane Victor, Elfriede Dreyer and Emma Willemse, is showing at White River Gallery, Casterbridge until 30 November, 2026.

A glimpse of GHOST taking shape.

Artist Emma Willemse installing 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘞𝘢𝘬𝘦 𝘐 - a work that gives new life to the remains of a mokoro, a traditional dugout canoe.

Below, the weathered wood of the original vessel, its decay part of what drew Emma to it. Above, a delicate paper-pulp drawing of the canoe on scrim fabric, suspended as though the spirit of the vessel is leaving its body.

A beautiful meditation on what remains, and what might continue beyond it.

For Elfriede Dreyer, the ghost is not simply something that belongs to the past. It occupies the space between presence and absence - between what has disappeared and what remains, but also between the world as it is and what it might become.

Elfriede’s practice has long explored ideas of utopia and dystopia, place, technology and our changing relationship with the natural world. In Ghost (2026), these concerns converge around a world undergoing profound technological and environmental change.

Her ghost is not something that has gone, but something caught between what was and what comes next.

Ghost brings together three solo exhibitions by Elfriede Dreyer, Diane Victor and Emma Willemse.

White River Gallery presents Ghost - a trio of solo exhibitions by Diane Victor, Elfriede Dreyer and Emma Willemse.

Bringing three distinct practices into conversation, Ghost considers haunting not as the supernatural, but as the persistence of what remains - in memory, material, landscape, the body and history.

Across drawing, painting, textile, sculpture and mixed media, the three artists explore the traces left by histories and experiences that are not easily resolved or contained.

Moving between the political and the personal, the material and the psychological, their work asks how the past continues to inhabit the present.

Opening Saturday 10 October at 12:00
White River Gallery, Casterbridge Lifestyle Centre

The opening will include a short talk by each artist about their work.

Acquired in 2013 through the Fried Gallery in Pretoria, we are fortunate to have this stirring smoke drawing (Untitled) by Dianne Victor in the Gallery’s Art collection. The purchase was facilitated by Elfriede Dreyer at the time. Dianne, Elfriede and Emma Willemse will be exhibiting at the gallery in the exhibition titled “Ghost” opening on 10th of October. We believe this is a worthwhile date to diarise in the meantime, further details will be shared.

In the weeks before our next curated exhibition opens on 10 October, White River Gallery at Casterbridge is loosening things up a little.

Think relaxed, casual, slightly warehouse-y. Storeroom pieces are coming out for some fresh air. Familiar artists alongside unexpected ones. Different mediums, genres and ideas sharing the same walls.

Come browse. Ask questions. Revisit something you’ve had your eye on. Stay a while.

For now, it’s less exhibition, more gallery in motion.
