ℹ️Until 1787 homosexuality was punishable by death in the Habsburg lands and it was not decriminalised in Austria until 1971. For both legal and social reasons, q***r people kept their love lives hidden. There are very few documents, diaries, letters or similar materials that explicitly address q***rness. Instead, it can be inferred from life circumstances, accounts by contemporary witnesses, or cryptic phrases handed down through the generations.
