NOW showing new work by Lynda Draper 🫧

'The artist created plaster moulds cast from her fingers and fingerprints, which were then used to shape and indent the blown glass pieces while they were still in their molten state. As a result, the blown bubbles are not smooth and uniform but marked, pressed, distorted by a real hand'

We’re delighted to see Klaus Moje named number 10 in The Canberra Times’ Canberra 100, recognizing the people who have helped shape our city over the past century.

Klaus came to Canberra from Germany in 1982 to establish the Glass Workshop at the Canberra School of Art. He went on to transform contemporary glass in Australia, influence generations of artists and help establish Canberra as an internationally recognised centre for the medium.

He was also instrumental in creating Canberra Glassworks.

This year Klaus would have turned 90, and we’re working to ensure his extraordinary legacy remains part of Canberra’s story.

Ahead of Canberra Glassworks’ 20th anniversary in 2027, we are raising funds to acquire two landmark works, Chromatic Evolution 1 (2012) and Chromatic Evolution 2 (2013), for permanent installation at the Glassworks.

We’re already more than halfway towards our $220,000 goal.

Help us secure these important works for Canberra and be part of Klaus’ legacy.

Tri-Beads Carole Griffith - Making and shaping beads 📿

Glass beads are made by gathering molten glass, then shaping and wrapping it onto a mandrel (a stainless steel and clay coated rod). Once the shape and size are right, it can then be decorated through shaping or adding details.

One of the most common shaping techniques is marvering, manipulating the glass with various tools. We mostly use graphite paddles to smooth the beads, and stainless steel to add cohesive decorative indents.

Totem Bubbles Sarah Murphy - Coldworking and decorating 🧪

Once flameworked glass has annealed, the artist can further decorate with coldworking. Sarah’s necklaces were first shaped with tools (such as a butterknife) before being acid-etched, achieving the pieces’ smooth matte texture. This has created a similar effect to sandblasting, while not exposing the delicate soft glass to this abrasive technique.
