Painted in Shanghai between 1976 and 1980, this series of small oil-on board works by John Wang captures the city through direct observation.

Painted en plein air, the works record streets, buildings and everyday scenes as Wang encountered them, offering an intimate view of a changing Shanghai at the end of the 1970s. These paintings form part of Observations in Oil, now showing at Liverpool Powerhouse.

Mia Lovelock collects natural materials including sandstone and ochre, grinding them into pigments that bring the earth directly into her artworks and textiles.

This 100% plastic-free painting process is made visible throughout Stories the Land Wears, with samples of Mia’s handmade pigments and brushes on display alongside the finished works.

Together, they offer an insight into the materials, methods and connection to Country that underpin her practice.
