The White Rabbit Gallery has four floors showcasing Judith Neilson's White Rabbit Collection. Dedicated to works made in the 21st century, the White Rabbit Collection is owned by Judith Neilson, who was inspired to establish it after her first trips to Beijing in the late 1990s. She was thrilled by the creative energy and technical quality of the works she saw and wanted to share them with people

outside China. She makes regular trips to China and Taiwan to augment the Collection, which now includes more than 2000 works by almost 700 artists. The gallery building, a Rolls-Royce service depot in the 1940s, was completely refitted as an exhibition space by architect William Smart. The White Rabbit Gallery is a registered charitable institution funded solely by Judith Neilson.

In Zhou Zixi’s ‘All Moment of Waiting’ series depicts a piece of white cloth suspended or placed in a monochrome landscape. The stark and minimalist white sheet becomes a metaphor for introspection and confession. The blank expanse evokes both the end and the beginning of creation.

Zhou says, “The white cloth in the painting is not painted as such, but emerges through the use of negative space … This produces a continually shifting perception for the viewer—at any given moment, is it a white cloth blocking the image, or the bare canvas revealed after traces of paint have been erased? At a deeper level, is it concealment or permeability? Ultimately, it tends to create a sense of unease between the painting and the viewer.”

Tianzhuo Chen is a practicing Buddhist and has a keen interest in the different spiritual and religious traditions in the world and in their sacred writings and scriptures. He is concerned also with Man’s alienation from God.

The video piece ‘G.H.O.S.T.’ is directed by Tianzhuo Chen and features performers Beio and China Yu, and music from French-Vietnamese producer Nodey. Filmed in the Indian holy city of Varanasi, on the banks of the Ganges River, they perform a type of street theatre that incorporates sound, dance and light into a pop-surreal spectacle. The performance is interspersed between meditative scenes shot along the river that depict wild dogs, boats, birds, people, architecture, and Ganga Aarti fire rituals.

Chen’s work navigates between high and low cultures, incorporating elements from the visual arts and opera, rave, punk and fashion as well as underground or fe**sh culture.

Let's Talk... about Zhu Jinshi 💬

This monumental 12-metre walk-in installation is made from around 5,100 sheets of handmade paper and 724 pieces of bamboo. It weighs half a tonne.

As you move through the work, light filters softly through the translucent paper, revealing ever-changing views.

No two viewpoints are the same. From one end to the other, the journey shifts between intimate details and sweeping forms, inviting you to slow down, look closely, and discover something new with every step.

“Stories are like the human gene pool, a living organism that sustains human activity. It is a living thing, an ever-changing spirit, and I’m creating and modifying genes as I edit a story, to give the life within a certain biological intensity.” Lu Pingyuan

Lu Pingyuan’s practice derives from his interest in the intangible essence of the human spirit. By blending surrealist storytelling with conceptual art and artificial intelligence, he aims to demonstrate the transmission and transformation of human experiences, and the spiritual connection between us and the universe.

Here, Lu has turned stories he wrote, as well as traditional mythological tales, into prompts which he input into AI. Through these prompts, he allowed AI to “draw” and to generate deity figures anew. From there he crafted them with traditional Chinese papercutting techniques.

Let's Talk... about Jiang Pengyi 💬

At first, the works of Jiang Pengyi appear as crystallised forms, coral like with winding tendrils. The series, The Monument Bestowed by Desolation is in fact, large format photographs of metal Buddha sculptures, which have been submerged in silver nitrate solution.

As the silver nitrate slowly metamorphoses the sculptures into organic forms,separating and remerging particles, Jiang Pengyi captures them, setting them against the Black Gobi Desert.

The works are hauntingly beautiful, telling us that even known and seemingly solid cultural and religious belief systems can transform into something new.

For Hou Chun-Ming, art is a form of reflection—a way to process life’s “ups and downs, innocence and evils, progress and loss.” Created as he turned 50, in ‘Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea’ the artist transforms eight versions of himself into characters in a wall-length comic strip, from studious schoolboy to angry rebel, spiritual seeker, and joyful father. Referencing the famous Chinese legend about Daoist gods crossing a stormy sea, the work draws on Taiwanese folklore, Japanese manga, and Buddhist traditions to explore myth’s power to shape self-understanding.

“I respect and revere rocks because they have been there for thousands of years. Rocks make me feel very small.” This photograph was captured within the vastness of the Zhongnan Mountains, where Feng Yan hiked as a boy during Spring Festival holidays. In the image, faded red characters painted on the rockface quote Lu You: “Hills bend and streams wind,” which Feng interprets as “restless landscape.” The artist’s attentive gaze reveals every fissure and crevice of the ancient rock forms, suggesting geological time.

Let's Talk... about Geng Yini 💬

Power is a central theme in Geng Yini’s practice.

She says, “All forces in the universe are insignificant and trivial. They are easily destroyed. Strength seems ridiculous. Even the fierce perish. Forces are constantly transforming in all things. The universe has always been a complete and balanced whole.”

In her Feral Pagoda series, a variety of animals are arranged in the shape of a mountain or pyramid-like structure. This suggests an order and social structure, while also pointing to natural laws, and natural survival mechanisms.

She speaks about the rise and fall of power using animals as a metaphor for the natural world and for humanity as a whole.

“While we gaze at the painting, it seems to gaze back.” Zhou Zixi’s ‘Black Hole’ series features dense black circular forms intruding into landscapes, producing multiple interpretations: suspended in air, they suggest an unfathomable gaze; grounded, they resemble an endless abyss. Zhou describes the black hole as an alien presence that “does not belong to the real world,” disrupting both natural and urban scenes. He insists it “does not symbolise anything,” instead altering perception itself and creating a disquieting sense of mutual observation between viewer and canvas.

Chen Chunmu draws inspiration from his hometown, where he spent his childhood exploring lush, misty mountains and gathering wild plants. His surrealist paintings, which combine animal, human and plant characteristics, resemble genetic experiments gone awry. Using flowing brushstrokes with diluted ink and acrylic, Chen channels his interest in traditional Chinese calligraphy and brush painting. In this series, branches, feathers, scales, wings, claws and human forms merge into erotic hermaphroditic birds, commenting on the ways human desire can “erode the system of nature.”
