In Zhou Zixiโs โAll Moment of Waitingโ series depicts a piece of white cloth suspended or placed in a monochrome landscape. The stark and minimalist white sheet becomes a metaphor for introspection and confession. The blank expanse evokes both the end and the beginning of creation.
Zhou says, โThe white cloth in the painting is not painted as such, but emerges through the use of negative space โฆ This produces a continually shifting perception for the viewerโat any given moment, is it a white cloth blocking the image, or the bare canvas revealed after traces of paint have been erased? At a deeper level, is it concealment or permeability? Ultimately, it tends to create a sense of unease between the painting and the viewer.โ
