This Indigenous Literacy Day, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme, Country Is Our Teacher, and the importance of First Nations stories, cultures and languages.

Stories are woven throughout Mungejup — from the history of the Aboriginal Housing Company and the community of The Block, to the people, experiences and culture that have shaped, and continue to shape, Redfern today.

Stories have always been an important way of sharing knowledge and passing experiences from one generation to the next, helping us understand where we’ve come from, who we are and the communities around us.

Today, we celebrate the stories that continue to teach us, connect us and keep culture alive.

Every person experiences Mungejup differently.

Some arrive curious about the history of The Block. Others come to better understand the people, stories and history of Redfern’s Aboriginal urban community through the artworks and stories shared throughout the gallery.

As they explore, questions are asked, conversations begin and new perspectives are discovered.

Whatever brings you here, we hope you leave with a deeper understanding of the people, resilience and community that continue to shape this place today.

Strength is carried in many ways and for generations, boxing has been more than sport — it has been discipline, connection, resilience, and a source of pride.

For Aboriginal men, Indigenous men, and men across all communities, these spaces have also represented strength, identity, and belonging.

This Men’s Health Week, we recognise the importance of checking in — on yourself and the men in your life. Wellbeing is not just physical. It’s social, emotional, and cultural. And it’s strengthened through connection, conversation, and community.
