Mungejup might not be quite what you expect.

It’s an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and culture space — but the story you’ll find here is deeply rooted in Redfern, The Block and the Community that has shaped it.

From furniture saved from homes on The Block, to displays that continue to grow through community contributions, to physical pieces of the neighbourhood preserved inside the gallery — there’s more to discover than you might see at first glance.

And if you join a guided experience, the photographs, objects, history and people begin to connect the dots.

Mungejup is a place to see, hear and understand more of the story of Redfern and The Block.

You may not have come across this one before — 1 October: International Day of Older Persons.

The 2026 theme, “The Age of Longevity: Rethinking Systems for Longer Lives”, encourages us to think about how systems, including housing, can support people throughout their lives.

Housing is more than a roof over our heads. For the generations who have called The Block home, it has shaped how people live, connect, raise families and build community — becoming part of a much bigger story of connection, change and the people who helped shape Redfern.

On International Day of Older Persons, we recognise the knowledge, experiences and stories that older generations carry, and the importance of making sure those stories continue to be remembered and shared.

Bringing people together at Mungejup

Last month, Mungejup and Aboriginal Housing Company Limited had the pleasure of welcoming the Australasian Housing Institute for their Preventing First Nations Youth Homelessness event.

It was fantastic to see the space filled with housing, government and community sector leaders, coming together for an afternoon of conversation, connection and shared learning around such an important cause.

We’re grateful to AHI for choosing Mungejup and giving us the opportunity to support such a meaningful afternoon — and to do what Mungejup does best: bring people together in a space surrounded by Aboriginal history, culture and story.

This Indigenous Literacy Day, we’re reflecting on this year’s theme, Country Is Our Teacher, and the importance of First Nations stories, cultures and languages.

Stories are woven throughout Mungejup — from the history of the Aboriginal Housing Company and the community of The Block, to the people, experiences and culture that have shaped, and continue to shape, Redfern today.

Stories have always been an important way of sharing knowledge and passing experiences from one generation to the next, helping us understand where we’ve come from, who we are and the communities around us.

Today, we celebrate the stories that continue to teach us, connect us and keep culture alive.

Every person experiences Mungejup differently.

Some arrive curious about the history of The Block. Others come to better understand the people, stories and history of Redfern’s Aboriginal urban community through the artworks and stories shared throughout the gallery.

As they explore, questions are asked, conversations begin and new perspectives are discovered.

Whatever brings you here, we hope you leave with a deeper understanding of the people, resilience and community that continue to shape this place today.

History isn't only something we look back on.

It's carried through people, shared through conversations and remembered by the communities who continue to live it.

At Mungejup, the stories of The Block continue to be told through the voices, memories and experiences that have shaped this place for generations.

Every visitor who takes the time to listen helps ensure these stories continue to be shared into the future.
