We are delighted to present the first of our new exhibitions to you. Architecture, nature and an intuitive relationship with colour breathe as one
in 'Soft. Geometry.', artist Serene Paul’s latest series of textiles. This is one of five exciting new shows opening this week at Brunswick Street Gallery. Join us for the opening event on Friday, 11 September, from 6–8 PM. All welcome.

Each piece in 'Soft. Geometry.' is a woven exploration of shape and texture, featuring hand-punched geometry with soft edges and hand-dyed yarns using natural pigments. Serene juxtaposes the rigid geometry of urban architecture with organic forms. Through this interplay of hard edges and soft materials, Serene invites viewers to contemplate the delicate tension between the built environment and the personal sanctuaries we create within it.

All artworks are hand-punched using 100% Australian wool, sourced directly from the mill, and punched onto linen. Serene uses a variety of natural botanical dye baths to produce different shades through a “slow art” process.

NEW IN THE STOCKROOM: DAVID GRIFFITH

Spring is in the air, and just arrived in the gallery is this elegant collection of still life paintings by David Griffiths. Working in a refined palette of muted tones, Griffiths brings a quiet sense of balance and contemplation to these beautifully observed compositions.
——
Working across oil, watercolour and acrylic, Griffith explores the ways we see, perceive and make sense of the world around us. Rooted in direct observation, his practice begins with drawing—whether from life, in the studio or through sketches made on location—forming the foundation of his distinctive painted mark.

Although he completed art school in 1999, it was in 2023 that Griffith committed to a sustained studio practice. These thoughtful still lifes reflect a quiet attentiveness to everyday subjects, transforming familiar objects into contemplative studies of light, form and perception.

Our five current exhibitions are open for final viewing all weekend, so why not stop by and explore the latest offerings before they close including 'Dialogue: The Surreal', an exhibition from Melbourne-based artists Ika Jumali and Isaac Hood.

Brunswick Street Gallery’s Dialogue exhibition series pairs the practices of two artists, creating a space where each artist’s work complements the other, amplifying the impact of the exhibition. Featuring the vibrant work of Ika Jumali alongside the dreamlike scenes of Isaac Hood, our The Surreal edition explores the fantastical through two distinct artistic approaches.

'The first evidence of quiet exchanges in the Big Wild—whispered stories from magic Mountain Friends, commemorated through portraits in vivid hyper-colour.'

Ika Jumali paints these figures with an intuitive approach to colour and line. Her expressive emotionalism is guided by feeling, while carefully layered colour and texture create a sense of vitality, optimism, and emotional resonance.

In this collection, Isaac Hood considers the roles and structures that shape everyday life. Within them, experience remains personal. Security does not always ease anxiety, and struggle does not remove the desire for something better. People continue to negotiate how they are seen, how much freedom they have, and what a meaningful life might look like. Beneath these roles is an ongoing tension between autonomy and belonging.

This weekend is your final chance to catch the five exhibitions currently showing at the gallery. Don't miss out!

“Open the windows and let the night blow in. Inhale the velvet sky, alive and dancing with pinprick stars. The ancient damp red earth. These olfactory wonders sent to envelope us at this place in the universe. To remind us that we are- right here- expansive energy. That we are warm and safe and loved and held. That the open plains and warm winds, night skies are places we can rest.” – Diary entry by Emma Sutherland. On the road to Deniliquin, Sept 2025.

Emma Sutherland is an abstract painter living and working on Gadigal land in NSW. Her work explores the immaterial and expanding energy of the natural world, particularly the landscape. Her work is anchored in the sensory expression of this energy – how we experience places, seasons, climates in our body and senses.

She paints things she cannot see but can feel viscerally – the texture and hum of the living world are registered in colours, mark-making, shapes and ethereal layers of polymer on her canvases. Paintings that are continuously made and unmade. Stripped back and painted over in translucent layers, like the internal mind revisiting the land, looking for memory and feeling.

NEW IN THE STOCKROOM: KIRSTIE USSHER

After a successful showing in the group exhibition ‘Winter Glow’ in July, we are thrilled to announce this stunning collection of paintings from Kirstie Ussher has just arrived in the stockroom.
——
Originally from Aotearoa/New Zealand and now based in Melbourne, emerging artist Kirstie Ussher explores abstraction through an intuitive, process-led painting practice.

Drawing inspiration from landscape photography captured on her iPhone, together with the weathered textures and overlooked surfaces encountered on urban walks, Ussher often begins with coloured pencil studies to investigate colour relationships and establish a visual starting point. Working primarily with oil paint, cold wax, sand and mixed media, she then builds and reworks surfaces through layering, scraping and sanding, allowing each painting to evolve intuitively beyond its initial study.

Her practice embraces curiosity and experimentation, where colour, texture and form emerge through an ongoing dialogue with the materials rather than a fixed idea. Richly layered surfaces reveal traces of their own making, inviting viewers to slow down, look closely and discover their own interpretations within the work.

This week is your final chance to catch Rebecca Fletcher's debut, sold-out solo exhibition Cut From The Same Cloth at Brunswick Street Gallery. Don't miss out!

As you move through Cut From The Same Cloth, you are invited to consider the ways women carry, adapt and redefine the roles passed down to them. Each female protagonist occupies the space between resilience and vulnerability, reflecting the quiet, often unseen moments.

Created during maternity leave after the birth of her second child, these works grew from an emotional landscape of motherhood and the importance of strong female figures in our lives. Every tear, every sleepless night and every moment of uncertainty found its way onto the canvas.

Throughout the exhibition, textiles become both a visual language and a metaphor. Woven patterns, thread-like lines and repeated motifs connect the works, echoing the invisible threads that bind generations. They invite you to reflect on the idea that we are all cut from the same cloth, connected through love, memory and the inherited behaviours that continue to shape us.

Through contemporary portraiture, bold colour and simplified form, these paintings celebrate the strength found in the female form. They are a tribute to the women who continue to show up, evolve and stand strong, even in life's most ordinary moments.

Rebecca Fletcher was awarded the Brunswick Street Gallery Prize at the gallery's 2025 Fifty Squared Art Prize.

EMMY COOPER GRANVILLE (NIGHTMARISH MEATBALLS)

Emmy Cooper Granville (Nightmarish Meatballs) examines unconventional beauty standards and mental illness through garish, colourful paintings. Her “Badly Drawn Ghouls” embrace distortion, awkwardness, and excess, rejecting perfection in favour of raw expression. These characters exist between humour and discomfort, inviting viewers to find tenderness, identity, and humanity within the strange and imperfect.

PRETTY UGLY explores the uncomfortable space between wanting to stand out and wanting to disappear. The Ghouls wear bright colours, funky jewellery, and clothes that don’t stand a chance of blending in…yet they remain unsure of themselves. They reflect the awkward and confusing performance of adulthood: trying to look like you've got it all together, while wondering if everyone else somehow managed to get an instruction manual that skipped your own mailbox.

Some of the Ghouls appear confident. Others seem overwhelmed, smug, exhausted, or completely zoned out. All of them are dealing with a lot, and maybe that’s why something about them feels familiar. Beneath the bright outfits, crooked smiles, and slightly unhinged expressions, they're simply trying to stay true to themselves in a world that demands conformity.

These Ghouls may be badly drawn, but they're doing their best. Aren't we all?

This is the final week to view our current exhibitions, including the eclectic and vibrant works of Hannah Goggs (Moody Rabbit), whose exhibition Animalia features a variety of motifs, from nature and food to intriguing patterns.
——
Animalia is a true reflection of Hannah and her practice. She is drawn to painting flowers of all kinds, fruit, food, birds, and animals with interesting patterns, often combining these elements whenever the opportunity arises.

Through still life, Hannah explores her favourite subjects more deeply, allowing them to interact and take on new characters. She enjoys creating images that people can easily understand and relate to—works that are playful, approachable, and full of life.
