Housed in the historic Former Royal Mint building, the Museum is home to the long-term collection Gods, Myths & Mortals: Greek Treasures Across the Millennia from the iconic Benaki Museum, Athens. The collection provides a snapshot of Greek history, from Classical, to Byzantine, Post-Byzantine, and Neo-Hellenic, winding through 8,000 years of Greek civilisation around the ground floor of the Mint,

including the original gold vault. The Museum holds events throughout the year, from the popular Summer Cinema program, to theatre, live music, and lectures.

Don’t miss this special opportunity to meet Greek artist Caroline Rovithi!

Caroline is a conceptual and visual artist based in Athens, whose works celebrate identity, resilience, and the enduring spirit of Greece through bold 1980s and pop culture aesthetics.

Caroline will be visiting the Hellenic Museum for two special days, where visitors can meet the artist and ask questions about her vibrant works. Thursday 11 & Friday 12 June only, free with Museum entry.

This event is part of Caroline’s wider tour of Australia, sponsored by and under the patronage of the Honorary Consul-General of Greece in Queensland, Mr George & Mrs Ying Mastrocostas.

With sincere thanks to organisers and valued sponsors G & K Stamboulidis and Family, Intralot, the Mantzis Family, the Siolis Family, the Stamoulis Family and Zaparas Lawyers.

CW: Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander viewers are advised that the 6th slide may contain the images of people who have passed away.

Reconciliation Week is a chance for all Australians to learn about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories, and celebrate the oldest, continuous living cultures on earth.

Despite their physical distance, there are a surprising number of common threads between First Nations and Greek cultures – and today we’re shining a light on one of these intersections. This is the story of how the Larrakia peoples (Traditional Owners of the greater Darwin region) and a Greek migrant family helped create an Aussie Friday night classic – fish and chips with barramundi.

Last week the Hellenic Museum was pleased to lend its support to the Giant Steps Autism School fundraiser. Our education team brought objects and stories to share with this amazing school community as they raised money for the important work of supporting adults and children on the autism spectrum. Thank you for having us, Giant Steps Melbourne!

Today, we commemorate Greek Independence Day. A moment that marks the courage, resilience, and enduring spirit of the Greek people in their fight for freedom.

On this day in 1821, a nation rose, driven by a deep longing for independence and a profound connection to its history, culture, and identity.

A rich cultural heritage that still inspires communities around the world today, through stories, traditions, and contributions that continue to shape our shared human experience. 🤍💙

It's World Poetry Day and we’re taking a moment to highlight one of the all-time greats – in ancient Greece, and well beyond. 📜✍️

Meet Sappho of Le**os: the legendary poetess and contemporary q***r icon whose impact has echoed through millennia. As a pioneer of Lyric poetry – designed to be sung with musical accompaniment – you could even say she’s left her mark on the modern concept of a ‘singer/songwriter’. 🎶

Do you think she’d be a fan of boygenius? 🤔❤️‍🔥

Big transitions and decisions can be overwhelming, and expecting 18 year olds to feel 100% prepared for their future carries a lot of pressure. Which is why the Hellenic Museum is honoured to partner with La Trobe University and AVID Australia for the Becoming Me program ✨

Becoming Me recognises how important identity is in the search for purpose. Through peer-facilitated mentorship and support, Becoming Me creates a safe-space for young people to discover what drives them, explore their motivations, and identify their passions - connecting the puzzle pieces to successfully plan their future without the dread.

After a successful 2022 pilot in Melbourne, the program is now expanding to Bendigo and surrounds! If you know - or are - someone between 18-25 who is not currently studying or working full time, visit the link below to learn more about this exciting initiative.

Unravelling The Dowry Project 🧵💗 Over the long weekend we were thrilled to welcome artist Sonia Zymantas for two sold-out subversive embroidery workshops, just in time for International Women's Day.

Inspired by Sonia's own series of artworks – embroidering new words into inherited textiles to challenge gendered language and stereotypes – guests came together on Saturday for a gentle moment of conversation, craft, and community. 🫂

Each session began with insights from our assistant curator Sara, exploring the evolution of dowries from ancient to modern times – traditionally gifted to brides as a form of protection against the uncertainties of life – and the intersections of women's history and textiles.

We were delighted to watch as guests unravelled historic expectations and wove new stories together, honouring and celebrating culture in ways significant to them. Thank you to everyone who joined us in stitching the past and present together. 🪡

Help kids in need with pre-loved tech! 👩‍🏫💻🍎

Our partners at Bank of Sydney are working with The Reconnect Project to turn your unused devices into learning lifelines for disadvantaged children. If you have a pre-loved laptop, tablet or smartphone, you can donate it via a Bank of Sydney branch by 28 February to help make a difference.

For more information, visit: https://www.banksyd.com.au/reconnect

Bank of Sydney has announced its back-to-school mobile device donation drive, in partnership with their 2025 Grant for Good Winner The Reconnect Project to help close the digital divide for disadvantaged school-age children.

From 29 January to 28 February, you can donate your pre-loved laptops, tablets and smartphones (ensuring they have had a factory reset) at any Bank of Sydney branch.

The Reconnect Project refurbishes the donated mobile devices, diverting them from landfill and re-homing them with families, individuals, and community groups across Australia.

✨ Rituals Exhibition✨

No, the ancient Greeks weren’t leaving a glass of milk and a carrot for Santa Claus and Rudolph, however they did have their own rituals of gift-giving to something magical 🔮

Discover what gifts the ancient Greeks would gift their gods at the Rituals: Gift for the Gods. In some areas of Greece, locals would provide cauldrons as a votive for Zeus - God of the Sky & Thunder. ⚡ In others, sprigs of rosemary would be found in hopes that Athena - Goddess of war & justice would listen to their prayers. 🌿

Exhibition included in the general admission ticket. Head to the link in bio to learn more! 🔗
