JOHN LESLIE ART PRIZE —

We are delighted to share that Greg Wood has been selected as a finalist in the 2026 John Leslie Art Prize at Gippsland Art Gallery. The winner will be announced tomorrow.

One of Australia’s most prestigious prizes for landscape painting, the John Leslie Art Prize is a $30,000 acquisitive prize now in its fourteenth iteration, consistently attracting the highest calibre of artists from across the country.

Greg Wood was awarded the prize in 2022 and we are thrilled to see his practice recognised at this level once again.

Though working in different media, Joel Sorensen in scorched timber and cement, Dee Donaldson in paint and pastel, both artists share an intuitive, tactile process, letting form emerge slowly through touch, repetition and material memory.

Where Donaldson’s bodies cluster and struggle at the centre of the frame, Sorensen’s carved and burnt forms hold a quieter, more resolved stillness - two distinct responses to what it means to work something out of hand.

3 DAYS OF DESIGN, COPENHAGEN –

Earlier this year, Otomys artist Madisyn Zabel exhibited at 3 Days of Design as part of Latitude: 55°N Meets 12°S, curated by Claire Delmar.

Working in original glass sculpture, Madisyn Zabel approaches the material as both subject and instrument, manipulating external surfaces and internal planes of colour to explore the boundary between two and three dimensions and between what is seen and what is sensed.

“My work is becoming increasingly intuitive. I feel freer in my painting now than I did in the past. I know that all the experience I have gained over the years allows me to trust both the process and my intuition. My hands carry the memory of the paintings I have made, so each new work becomes part of an ongoing conversation between myself and the painting in front of me. At the same time, all the previous paintings also take part in that conversation. They are all part of a continuous investigation into colour and form. I am interested in composition and colour - finding something that, although abstract, can evoke space, light, proximity and distance.”

Growing up ‘where the river meets the ocean’ in northern Brazil and influenced by his grandfather, an Indigenous Amazonian potter and fisherman, Eduardo Santos draws on his surroundings to create visceral, highly textural works.

Working with gravity as a primary tool, he guides layers of sand, earth and pigment as they accrete like sediment, forming dense surfaces that evoke the haptic experience reminiscent of standing inside a river cave.

Helen Redmond’s subject is illusory: metaphysical rather than actual. Volumes of space contain time, as in turn time erodes space. Decay. Silence. Hermetic secrecy. All of these qualities are by their nature impossible to quantify. And painting has always tried.
