Today marks the final day of Sydney Contemporary.

Our 2026 presentation brings together 13 distinct practices from across the Martin Browne Contemporary program, with works exploring landscape, abstraction and material experimentation.

NICOLA GOWER WALLIS | PADDOCK THOUGHTS

Continuing at Martin Browne Contemporary, Paddock Thoughts presents a new body of work shaped by the landscapes, animals and everyday encounters of rural Australia. Gower Wallis approaches these familiar subjects with humour, poetry and a sense of quiet strangeness. Paddocks, horses, birds and figures emerge through layered surfaces and shifting perspectives, giving ordinary scenes an unexpected and gently offbeat quality.

Sydney Contemporary is now on ! Martin Browne Contemporary is delighted to return to Carriageworks for the fair’s 10th edition, presenting a considered selection of works by twelve gallery artists at Booth C08.

Bringing together painting, porcelain and sculptural glass, our Sydney Contemporary 2026 presentation spans abstraction, landscape and the natural world, alongside material experimentation and the reinterpretation of historical forms. Across the booth, these distinct practices are brought into considered dialogue through their individual approaches to colour, material and form.

MITAKIKI WOMEN’S COLLABORATIVE | ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

Across a rich field of colour and repeated markings, the Mitakiki Women’s Collaborative map the presence of kapi tjukurla, rock holes where water gathers after rain and remains as a vital source through the dry season.

This painting is one of four works by Naomi Kantjuriny, Mona Mitakiki and Tjimpayi Presley currently on view at Martin Browne Contemporary as part of MINYMA TJUTA, a new exhibition by Tjala Arts. Together, they paint as the Mitakiki Women’s Collaborative, building their compositions through repetition, rhythm and shifting fields of colour, with each mark forming part of an intricate visual mapping of Country, water and cultural knowledge.

The rock holes depicted relate to Kungkarangkalpa Tjukurpa, the Seven Sisters Story, in which the sisters are pursued across Country by a bad man, Wati Nyiru. The wise elder sisters protect and teach the younger women, helping them resist his tricks, while Wati Nyiru changes shape into different rock formations and landmarks. These sites remain part of the landscape and are important Anangu ceremonial places. Naomi, Mona and Tjimpayi were taught to paint this story by the late senior artist Kunmanara Katie Kawiny. Through their collaborative practice, the women continue to carry her knowledge forward, translating stories of Country into richly layered paintings that are both collective and distinctly their own.
