OLSEN Gallery Leading contemporary art gallery in Sydney, Australia Foremost in the gallery's stable is John Olsen, now regarded as Australia's most esteemed living artist.

OLSEN, known previously as Olsen Irwin and Tim Olsen Gallery, was established in 1993 and exhibits a broad spectrum of Australian and international art, in the gallery, online, and at art fairs. Gallery founder and director Tim Olsen has cultivated a stable of artists that he feel presents a comprehensive and poignant view of the contemporary arts in Australia. With a continually changing exhibition calendar we showcase the work of both emerging and established artists. We have nurtured the careers of artists from their first exhibition out of art school and proudly see them now as leading lights in the Australian art scene. In addition to the staging of countless critically acclaimed exhibitions the gallery has hosted the launch of many books devoted to his unique and ingenious art making. Tim has also negotiated the sale of some of the most significant paintings in Olsen's oeuvre to both private and institutional collections. Tim's enthusiasm for works on paper has also inspired a specific works on paper space the ANNEXE, which now resides directly behind the main gallery at 74 Queen Street, Woollahra. With a definite focus on the work of Australian artists, we are actively fostering a dialogue between Australia art and our international colleagues with exhibitions of leading contemporary artists from Europe, Asia and America being planned for the coming years. Michelle Cawthorn’s solo exhibition ‘Anni’s Birds’ opens next week, join us in the gallery for opening celebrations on 28 October, 5-7pm. Running from 28 October - 21 November 2026.

As Michelle writes:
“The collages in this exhibition challenge you to consider whether what you think you know is the same as what you see. Collage creates a tension between its original and altered states, a frisson between known and unknown; like something on the tip of your tongue.”

Time Composition #1 unsettles photography’s usual relationship to the instant. Rather than capturing a single decisive moment, this work was built through repeated exposures on photographic paper made in intervals of minutes, hours, months, across years. The resulting image records differing conditions of light, atmosphere and duration - holding multiple temporalities within a single photographic surface. In doing so, the work approaches photography not as a record of one moment, but as a layered composition of time itself.

SUPERMAN, from Tim Georgeson’s SKYLORE series, portrays Yankunytjatjara artist Derik Lynch suspended in flight against the night sky, hovering between human presence, mythology and Sky Country.

The Ulrick & Win Schubert Photography Award platforms artists from across the country working within the broad field of contemporary photography. Finalists will be judged by UNSW Galleries Director José Da Silva, independent curator and writer Mikala Tai and former Award winner Tamara Dean.

The foundation of her practice is the sampling of didactic images – pictures found in scientific literature, historical catalogues, and so forth, which claim to depict the most perfect or salient example of their subject. In rephrasing these images as paintings, their educational utility is lost, giving way to new information.

Highlighting 'Pigment', a wonderful activation from Avenue The Label hosted this week at Buon Gusto Studios to raise money for The Skin Hospital.

Thirteen incredible Australian artists were hosted at Buon Gusto Studios including Olsen artists, Eliza Gosse, James Coe and Camille Olsen Ormandy, for a morning of art, conversation and creativity.⁠ Each artist was given one of the label's signature raffia hats and complete creative freedom to make it their own. No brief. No rules. No two alike.!

'Brown Treeceeper' has travelled far and wide in the last few months having been included in exhibition 'A Nest in the Hills: The Symbiosis of Women and Birds in Contemporary Australian Art' and also selected as a finalist in the Kedumba Drawing Award 2026
