Valley Heights Rail Museum

The Valley Heights Rail Museum is OPEN 10am-3pm on selected Sundays of the month. See Blue Mountains transport history preserved.

Ride on the Valley Heights Steam Tramway. The Valley Heights Locomotive Depot Heritage Museum was formed in 1988 to preserve and develop the former Valley Heights Locomotive Depot into a Railway and Heritage Museum. The Valley Heights Museum is a Not for Profit organization and is also affiliated with Transport Heritage NSW (formerly the NSW Rail Transport Museum) as their Blue Mountains Division.

Located at Valley Heights, (77 kilometres west of Sydney), in the World Heritage Listed Blue Mountains, the Museum is an easy 75 minute drive from the Sydney CBD. Hourly trains services to and from Sydney (Central) also service Valley Heights, with the Museum a short 15 minute walk from the station. Our Museum displays a collection of both Railway and Tramway exhibits as well as miscellaneous small exhibits, Railway Art and Model Railway. A shop offering a range of souvenirs and light refreshments is also available for our visitors convenience. The Steam Tram & Railway Preservation Society are also located on site and operate the Valley Heights Steam Tramway on open days (subject to certain conditions), between February and December. The Museum is open on the 2nd & 4th Sundays of most months (except 2nd Sunday of May - Mothers Day and 4th Sunday of December), from 10am to 4pm. Our Admission charge includes Museum Entry and Unlimited rides, the proceeds of which go towards to ongoing improvement of the Museum. Spring into Father's Day this Sunday 6 September, at the Valley Heights Rail Museum.

Join our special Father's Day opening and enjoy all the excitement of a steam train ride to thrill Dad and the whole family.

If capacity permits, there may even be the chance to upgrade to an early "BIG" Barbeque Breakfast 8:30am, 9am or 9:30am. Alternatively enjoy a Sausage Sizzle or Egg and Bacon roll from the barbeque or relax with some light refreshments from the shop.

Lots to see to keep dad entertained on his day. Explore the many exhibits inside the 112-year-old roundhouse, Railway art and model railway displays.

Rides depart hourly commencing from 10:30 until 2:30pm. Enjoy and experience a ride on the unique "Valley Heights Mixed" steam hauled train enjoy a 15-20 journey back in time in a century old Cowboy type suburban passenger carriage.

You may even find that something special from our range pre-loved book sales and usual quirky merchandise to supplement his Father's Day gift.

Tickets can be purchased at the door but to secure your preferred ride time we recommend you book to secure and reserve seats.

Video highlights from the 2026 Blue Mountains Steam Funfest. Many thanks to the 100s of visitors who came along for the fun over the 3 days of the event and to the many volunteers who gave their time during the event. Also to Transport Heritage NSW for sending locomotive 3265 for cab inspection and providing extra volunteer assistance and to the members of the Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum for your support and providing that extra interest with you steam machines.

The Blue Mountains Steam FunFest returns these winter school holidays.

Come along and join in the 3 days of steam packed excitement and action.

Your tickets cover not just one, but two heritage steam rides. The Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum return with a display of historic steam machinery.

For the first time Transport Heritage NSW & Powerhouse Museum will showcase one of their priceless operational steam locomotives. 124-year-old 3265 will visit the Blue Mountains and spend the three days of the FunFest away from her usual home at the NSW Rail Museum.

Visitors to the FunFest will be invited aboard, to join the locomotive's crew by the warm fire inside the cab and learn about how their locomotive works.

Last year's event saw record attendances across the three days. This promises to be even better.

Winter school holidays are just around the corner.

Looking for some family fun to get the kids fired up about getting out of the house?

The Blue Mountains Steam FunFest returns from Friday 10 July to Sunday 12 July inclusive. Come along and absorb the steamy atmosphere to warm up your winter day.

Located in at Valley Heights in the lower Blue Mountains, within 20 minutes from Penrith, 40 minutes from Parramatta and less than an hour west of Sydney, the Valley Heights Rail Museum with its regular attractions combines with Transport Heritage NSW and the Campbelltown Steam & Machinery Museum to host three days of steam fun and excitement.

Your ticket price includes not one but two different ride experiences, a display of operating vintage steam machines, steam trains and a steam tram. For the first time at Valley Heights, climb aboard steam locomotive 3265 and experience what it is like inside the cab of a breathing 124-year-old steam locomotive. Talk to the driver and fireman and learn about their jobs and how their locomotive works.

Explore the historic Blue Mountains Locomotive Depot with its collection of historic locomotives and carriages resting inside the 112-year-old steam locomotive roundhouse. Admire the railway art, the two operating model railways and much more.

Come on in and see the at the Valley Heights Rail Museum in the Blue Mountains this Sunday.

Steam returns to the Mountains!

See the unique Sydney Steam Tram return to the rails at the historic Blue Mountains Locomotive Depot at Valley Heights.

After a 3-month layoff for mandatory maintenance, the locomotive depot and museum welcome back this heritage listed rarity.

On Sunday 8 March, take a 15 minute ride* in a restored tramcar behind No. 103A, one of the world’s few working examples.

Admire the usual exhibits, large and small, that tell the story of 150 years of railways across the Mountains. Wander through the 112 year old, heritage listed, 1914 Roundhouse where a newly expanded range of locomotives, wagons and carriages are open for inspection.

Take time to explore, then relax with a hot or cold snack and drink in the café, before browsing the shop for that unusual gift or souvenir.

SENIORS SPECIAL OFFERS – March 2026

Blue Mountains Seniors Festival combines with our Regular Open Days to welcome the return of our steam operations for 2026

During the month of March Seniors have 4 opportunities to visit the Valley heights Rail Museum. We welcome seniors and concession holders at half price during the month of March. upon presentation of your valid Seniors/Concession Card. Yes, that's two admissions for $17.

Join us on Sundays 8 & 22, explore the Museum and enjoy a ride aboard either our heritage Sydney Steam Tram (Sunday 8 March) or board the unique Valley Heights Mixed steam train (Sunday 22 March) for a short 15-minute ride back in time.

Alternatively, come along for a special opportunity for a morning tea and ‘Behind the Scenes’ tour of the Museum on Wednesdays 11 & 18 March. See activities being performed by our volunteers, not normally seen by the general public. Talk with our volunteers and learn about the work they do. You may even see something that interests you which you may be able to help us with. Join us for Morning Tea (additional $10 per person) from 10am before your specially guided tour, commencing at 11am.
