Merchant Navy Veterans Day | Sept. 3

They sailed without knowing if they would make it home.

During the Second World War, some 12,000 men and women served in Canada’s Merchant Navy, carrying troops, food, fuel, equipment and other essential supplies across dangerous waters.

Their work was critical during the Battle of the Atlantic, the longest continuous campaign of the Second World War. Merchant ships and their crews faced the constant threat of German U-boats as they worked to keep vital supply lines open between North America and Europe.

Canadian merchant ships completed more than 25,000 voyages during the war.

Today, on Merchant Navy Veterans Day, we remember the courage and sacrifice of the Canadians who kept those lifelines moving.

We remember them.

The UCalgary Founders’ Gallery is temporarily closed until Oct. 1, 2026, as we prepare for the opening of our fall exhibition, Deployed: Canadian Army Reservists Overseas.
Deployed: Canadian Army Reservists Overseas explores the realities faced by Canadian troops serving abroad through artifacts and a feature-length documentary by Col. Michael Vernon (Retired). The exhibition will focus on Alberta’s 41 Canadian Brigade Group and its overseas service from the 1970s through the 2000s.

We look forward to welcoming you back to the gallery this fall.

An adventure with a purpose - Into the Summit for Mental Health and Wellness is back.

On Oct. 25, a team of cavers will head underground into Rat's Nest Cave near Canmore to raise funds in support of military veterans and family members impacted by operational stress injuries.

Presented by the Hamilton Gault Memorial Fund, the event supports mental health and wellness initiatives for veterans, serving members and their families.

Led by experienced Canadian caver Christian Stenner and supported by Canmore Cave Tours, participants will climb, crawl and squeeze their way through the cave while raising funds for an important cause.

Want to take on the challenge? You can join the team or support a participant with a donation.

On This Day | Aug. 19, 1942

The story of Dieppe did not end on the beaches.

Of the nearly 5,000 Canadians who took part in the Dieppe Raid, 1,946 became prisoners of war.

Among them was Lt. Douglas. While held at Oflag VIIB, he carved small pieces of wood, including a scene from his prison window. He also lived through the period when Canadian prisoners were shackled by their German captors.

Some prisoners found ingenious ways to free themselves, fashioning keys from the small can openers found on sardine cans in Red Cross parcels.

Today, these carvings, handcuffs, and a handmade “can opener” key are preserved at The Military Museums. Small objects that tell a much larger story of captivity, resilience, and survival after Dieppe.

On the 84th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, we remember the Canadians who fought, those who were captured, and those who never returned home.
