200 of the 900 students who contributed to this yearโ€™s sails joined us for this special day, seeing their artworks artworks lifted into the wind in Gairloch Gardens. The students also enjoyed a lovely picnic and an en plein air watercolour painting activity, making the celebration even more memorable!

We were thrilled to welcome artist Emilia Kabakov back for the relaunch, celebrating alongside the students, families, and community members who helped make the day so meaningful. Special thank you to Minister Stan Cho, MP Sima Acan, MPPs Stephen Crawford and Effie Triantafilopoulos, and Mayor Rob Burton for joining us in this celebration of art, collaboration, and hope.

The Ship of Tolerance is presented in collaboration with the Ilya and Emilia Kabakov Foundation and the National Gallery of Canada. The National Gallery of Canadaโ€™s National Engagement initiative is generously supported by Michael Nesbitt, with additional funding from the National Gallery of Canada Foundation and Visit Oakville.

Visit us at Gairloch Gardens to experience this sculpture, a powerful reminder of the brighter futures we can imagine and create together.

Awarded the Silver Lion at the 2022 Venice Biennale, Ali Cherriโ€™s multidisciplinary practice spans film, sculpture, drawing, and installation. His work explores how political violence, displacement, and environmental change become embedded in bodies, landscapes, and material culture.

At the Gairloch Gallery, Cherri presents a series of hybrid sculptures combining different materials and ancient artifacts the artist sourced from auctions and markets. Alongside the sculptures are a series of watercolour paintings and the film ๐˜–๐˜ง ๐˜”๐˜ฆ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜Ž๐˜ฐ๐˜ฅ๐˜ด ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ฅ ๐˜”๐˜ถ๐˜ฅ, exploring the relationship between humans, labour, and the environment in northern Sudan. Two outdoor sculptures appear in the Gairloch Gardens sculpture garden: ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜›๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜“๐˜ช๐˜ง๐˜ฆ, which reinterprets ancient Assyrian reliefs of a sacred tree, and ๐˜“๐˜ฆ๐˜ด (๐˜š๐˜ถ๐˜ณ)๐˜๐˜ช๐˜ท๐˜ข๐˜ฏ๐˜ต๐˜ด, which reflects poetically on survival after catastrophe. As part of Oakville Galleriesโ€™ summer program, Cherri will also present two evenings of films through Sunset Kino.

At Centennial Gallery, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜ž๐˜ข๐˜ต๐˜ค๐˜ฉ๐˜ฎ๐˜ข๐˜ฏ, set in Cypriot no manโ€™s land, reflects on sovereignty, borders, and the lasting effects of geopolitical division. Moving between myth and history, ruin and regeneration, Cherriโ€™s work considers how violence continues across generations while also imagining possibilities for repair, resilience, and renewal.

The site-specific installation of synthetic rubber-drenched flowers, wire and metal buckets crosses the thresholds spanning the bay window and covered porch of Gairloch Gardens with climbing vines that are reaching outwards like hydro wires or communication lines. The energy transmitted throughout the sculpture reflects the contemplation on the restorative and hopefulness of gardening, regenerating oneself in order to face destruction." โ€” Exhibition text by Karen Kravenโ

๐˜ˆ ๐˜’๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ด ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฏ ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜Œ๐˜บ๐˜ฆ๐˜ด, presented at the Tรผrkiye Pavilion at the 2026 Venice Biennale, unfolds across sculpture, textiles, painting, and installation, exploring care, belonging, and migration. Rooted in lived experiences of displacement, gender, and identity, GรผreลŸโ€™s practice brings together everyday materials and gestures of tenderness and resistance, where the personal and political remain closely intertwined.

We look forward to welcoming our community and the broader GTA to explore the nuances of GรผreลŸโ€™s practice right here in Oakville in 2027.
