What makes Port Alberni so special? Our history, our place in the world, and the people who live here of course! We think Port Alberni would make a great choice to be the star of season one of HGTV’s Home Town Takeover Canada.

Check out the video that was submitted to the producers of the series in 2025 to show them what we’re made of… you may need a tissue after watching this, be warned! 😊

We're in the final running now, and the show's producers have challenged us to come together one more time to show them why Port Alberni is the best choice for Home Town Takeover Canada.

Join us June 9th at Harbour Quay, 8-11am and help us show our spirit and strength in numbers. Go Port Alberni!!

Wondering what has been happening at the APR? A question we get asked quite frequently. And the answer is... A LOT!

APR Mechanic Laurie has been hard at work along side the volunteer boilermakers completing winter maintenance, inspection and repairs to the #7 Steam Locomotive in preparation for the Summer Season.

The track crew have opened up additional trackage after some much needed tie replacement near Roger st, allowing the train to nose up to the Roger St crossing for the 2026 Season.

The track crew have also cleared off the brush from Yard Track #7 and reorganized the yard equipment to allow easier access to the coaches for the crew, and hopefully be less visible to vandals. Unfortunately, the vandalism has been quite bad the past few months with many wires cut and stolen, and multiple break ins on the coaches.

The inside of the coaches have seen quite a bit of cleaning after the toll this past winter took on them. Also, Joel from Larsen Co. Electric has installed a new fridge so cold drinks can be sold at the Train Station prior to departure.

The Soo Line flat car is being converted into the main stage for the Canada Day Celebrations at Harbour Quay. Bert and Brent have been busy prepping the deck and constructing the new handrails. Once complete prior to Canada Day, the car will see a full repaint (back to white) and a refresh on the lettering will some shortly after.

The Alberni Valley Community Forest Crew Speeder needed some TLC after the cold winter, so Kade and Logan took that project on to get it running again, while Richard worked on adjustments to the air brake system.

Brush cutting... everywhere, has been an ongoing task, Richard and Kade, have been hard at work, keeping up with the vegetation, using the on track mower (ex. Tie Crane).

There have been so many projects from small to big that have taken place over the past few months, and with our operating season coming up quickly, many of these projects are nearing completion, and crews are already starting to prep for fall and winter projects.

Guess what?? The hit HGTV show Home Town Takeover is coming to Canada this year—and Port Alberni is in the running!

What does that mean? It means we could get a town makeover from their team of renovation experts and designers.

The show's producers have challenged us to come together one more time and show them why Port Alberni is the best choice!

Mark your calendars for the morning of June 9th at Harbour Quay, 8 a.m. - 11 a.m. More event details to follow...

Please note: This will be a filmed event so assume you will be on national TV! Come ready to sign some paperwork. Minors will need to have both adults sign a consent form. (To be provided)

We absolutely love seeing vegetation management taking place on the Island rail, Corridor, specifically in the Regional District of Nanaimo.

Vegetation is a major hazard to all types of railways, as it causes a fire risk to critical infrastructure, and as a key factor in tie decay.

Is great to see the Regional District of Nanaimo and our friends at the Island Corridor Foundation, taking these crucial steps to protecting the Corridor.

Crews are working hard at finishing up winter maintenance and repairs to the No. 7 Steam Locomotive, with the hopes of having it back in operation early this summer.

Today, we brought the steam locomotive out so we can do some additional cleaning to prepare for our hydrostatic test of the boiler and upcoming steam tests.
