Myrmecocystus testaceus, or the Little Honeypot Ant, is the only true honeypot species from Canada. They are popular with experienced antkeepers for their hanging repletes - workers with specialized social stomachs hanging off their chamber ceilings. In the wild, honeypot ants farm aphids and collect sugar secretions from galls, and nectar from the various desert flowers, and in particular fruits of the Prickly-Pear cactus. Large volumes of this liquid are stored and consumed during times when food is less abundant.

They are not recommended for beginners, as they are slow-growing, fragile and come with strict care needs.

Aphaenogaster tennesseensis, or the Tennessee Collared Ant, is a parasitic species of Aphaenogaster with bright red queens and workers.

With colonies of several thousand workers, these ants create colonies much larger than their host species, Aphaenogaster rudis and picea. These queens also accept fully hardened host workers, and are probably the easiest parasite to keep.

They do best under 30-50% humidity and 24°-27° Celsius. They also need a substrate to soak up liquids as they have no social stomach.

Manica hunteri, or the Hunter's Ruby Ant is a high elevation species, dwelling at the tops of the Rocky Mountains. They are large, with queens ranging from 9.5 to 13 mm and workers from 5 to 9 mm. They are semi-claustral and accept a fairly wide range of foods in captivity, although they require a very diverse diet. It's theorized that these ants may hunt workers of other species in the wild, and they are frequently found next to Formica nests. It has been said that these ants can be fed off of ant brood as well.

Heat is vital for this species, and it is recommended to keep them above 27 degrees Celsius. At room temperature, they take 2 years to develop to the worker stage. If heated, they will mature in a little more than 1.5 months.

Pheidole pilifera, the Hairy Big Headed Ant, is an amazing beginner species perfect for someone who is looking for an entertaining desktop ant farm. Colonies eat just about anything, and grow very quickly if heated (>28°C/>65% humidity) and fed frequently. Major workers have large heads used to crack seeds and tear through insect parts. Colonies will swarm food, especially seeds, making for an entertaining spectacle as you watch large headed soldiers and smaller sized workers consume and break down their food.
