Madrona is an art gallery in downtown Victoria, BC focusing on historic & contemporary Canadian art.

Madrona Gallery represents a broad spectrum of Sculptors and Painters from around the country. We work very hard to represent both emerging local talent and well established artists from around the country. We have a stable of about 20 artists that we promote through organized exhibitions throughout the year.

We’re pleased to announce an upcoming solo exhibition of new paintings by acclaimed Canadian artist Rick Bond at Madrona Gallery. Known for his bold use of colour, expressive brushwork, and distinctive sense of rhythm, Bond brings a remarkable energy to the landscapes and everyday scenes that inspire him. Moving freely between observation and abstraction, Bond captures the character of a place, the spontaneity and joy of experiencing it. Throughout his distinguished career, he has developed a visual language that continues to evolve with curiosity, confidence, and imagination.

A little turkey for Thanksgiving. 🦃

In “Europa” and “Ganymede”, Joe Coffey gives each bird a wonderful sense of character. One turkey spreads its wings with theatrical confidence, while the other seems caught mid-step. Their expressive postures stand against large coral circles that suggest celestial bodies, while the blackboards in the background, with their mathematical markings, introduce a scientific element.

The titles add another interesting layer. Europa and Ganymede are two of Jupiter’s moons, named after figures from Greek mythology. These grand mythological references offer an amusing contrast to Coffey’s rather earthbound subjects. It’s a meeting of realism, abstraction, mythology, and humour.

A remarkable arrival from Meghan Hildebrand. 10/10. ✨

Hildebrand builds the landscape through an accumulation of cabins, docks, trees, and water, layering pattern, colour, and repeated marks until the scene feels dense and expansive. The dark passage of water through the centre gives the composition its pull, while the whale adds a subtle sense of scale and depth the landscape.

New arrival: Unsettled Landscape no. 3 (Maplewood Road) by Nathan Birch, fresh from the artist’s studio.

This piece depicts a broad lawn beneath an immense, pale sky, flanked by dark cedars. Here, Birch renders the familiar with an undercurrent of unease.

Birch (BFA, Alberta College of Art and Design) has exhibited across Canada, with work in collections including the Canada Council for the Arts and the Alberta Foundation for the Arts.

Clayton Anderson’s Down in the Cove opens this Saturday, September 26. Join us at Madrona Gallery for the opening reception from 1 to 3 pm. The exhibition runs through October 9.

Anderson has spent more than 40 years painting the West Coast. His contemporary approach to colour, line and form captures both the quiet of a sheltered cove and the scale of B.C.’s skies and islands. If you’re walking through Trounce Alley, you can see two of the paintings in our window ahead of the opening.
