Madrona is an art gallery in downtown Victoria, BC focusing on historic & contemporary Canadian art.

Madrona Gallery represents a broad spectrum of Sculptors and Painters from around the country. We work very hard to represent both emerging local talent and well established artists from around the country. We have a stable of about 20 artists that we promote through organized exhibitions throughout the year.

Palaya Qiatsuq’s “Sedna Forming Wings” is a new arrival, exploring the transformation of the legendary Inuit sea goddess.

The sweeping curve of the body and tail gives the sculpture a natural sense of motion, while the dark serpentine contrasts beautifully with the warm, textured bone used for the wings and hair.

Qiatsuq learned to carve by watching his father and created his first works at just 12 years old. For more than two decades, he has drawn on traditional stories of transformation and shamanism, viewing his work as a way to keep these stories alive and share his culture with others.

April Ponsford’s River Spirits has a striking power, built through a predominantly black, white and grey palette with flashes of ochre. Its heavily textured surface is physical; forms push through or break beyond themselves. The composition moves from brighter and more open on the left into deeper, denser blacks on the right, giving the work movement and tension, while the ochre brushstrokes anchor the eye and make the colour stand out.

Born in Prince Rupert, British Columbia, Ponsford draws inspiration from the wild landscapes of the North Coast and Vancouver Island. Her process combines the formality and technique of painting with intuition and close observation of the landscapes that surround her. Her work can be found in public and private collections across Canada, the United States, South America and Europe.

Jack Shadbolt’s monumental “Architecture of a Winter Garden” is an ambitious three-panel work from 1971. Spanning 10 feet across, the composition moves between landscape, structure, and abstraction, with gestural lines intersecting and gathering into dense, scaffold-like forms before opening into lighter passages of space.

A major figure in Canadian modernism, Shadbolt developed his distinctive approach through decades of looking at the B.C. landscape alongside international influences. He met Emily Carr in 1930, studied in London and Paris, documented his experiences overseas during the Second World War, and later studied in New York as Abstract Expressionism was emerging.

In Architecture of a Winter Garden, his interest in both natural forms and abstraction comes together as organic, calligraphic marks take on an almost architectural presence.

Ningiukulu Teevee’s “Fluorescent For Fishing Lure” captures a moment of daily life: the practical use of a piece of fluorescent material, likely trail-marking tape, as a fishing lure. The electric orange, deep plum and lavender give the figure a strong presence, while the eyes and the facial expression bring a quiet stillness

Here, a simple chore becomes both documentary and personal. The work shows how something as ordinary as preparing a fishing lure can carry knowledge about a place and its people.

Teevee often draws from everyday life in Kinngait, recording practices, stories and observations through a contemporary lens. Her work has been exhibited in major public galleries. Teevee’s first children’s book, Alego, was shortlisted for the Governor General’s Literary Award for children’s illustration.

Lesley Finlayson’s There I Was… Here We Are is now on view at Madrona Gallery through September 5.

In this exhibition, Finlayson immerses the viewer in lush, painterly landscapes shaped by decades of practice. Trees emerge through clusters of rhythmic brushstrokes, while horizon lines appear and dissolve within layered surfaces. For Finlayson, these landscapes are both documents of place and expressions of self, creating what she describes as a sense of “visual empathy”: a connection between artist, landscape, and viewer.

An early and exciting watercolour by Toni Onley OC RCA, “Untitled (House Between Trees)” offers a look at the foundations of expressive approach that would come to define his work.

Painted in 1953, the work reflects the influence of Onley’s teacher, Canadian landscape painter Carl Schaefer. Structured, stylized forms give shape to the house and surrounding trees, while bold, atmospheric washes of colour create movement across the sky. The style anticipates Onley’s later mastery of watercolour, where this contrast became a signature of his practice.

Joe Coffey’s Harvest Moon ‘Idylle’ draws the viewer into a scene where awe and danger sit side by side. The owl’s scale and watchful gaze dominate the composition, while smaller details emerge on closer inspection: two lizards in the lower corners and shards of broken glass across the window.

Known for his paintings of animals, Coffey approaches his subjects as distinct characters rather than simply elements of a scene. In Harvest Moon ‘Idylle’, the owl’s presence creates a sense of stillness and tension, set against the atmosphere and details of the painting.

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last Saturday for the opening of Shuvinai Ashoona: Ink Drawings 2004–2015.

The exhibition continues at Madrona Gallery through August 28, with a selection of Ashoona’s ink drawings spanning more than a decade of her practice.

Ashoona is one of Canada’s leading contemporary artists. Based in Kinngait, Nunavut, she is known for drawings that bring together everyday life, Inuit culture, imagined figures and unexpected narratives. Her work has received international recognition, including an Honourable Mention at the 2022 Venice Biennale.
