Deluge Contemporary Art Our ongoing program of activities includes exhibitions, lectures, screenings, off-site projects, and the annual Antimatter festival.

A lifetime of surgeries continues with an upgrade in battery life and a downgrade in scar tissue when the filmmaker has his original pacemaker replaced after 16 years.

Josh Weissbach is an experimental filmmaker. His films have been shown worldwide in such venues as Ann Arbor Film Festival, Light Field, European Media Art Festival, 25 FPS Festival, Courtisane Festival, First Look at Museum of the Moving Image, Alchemy Film and Moving Image Festival, Festival dei Popoli and Festival des Cinémas Différents et Expérimentaux de Paris. He has won jury prizes at Montreal Underground, Videoex, ICDOCS, Onion City, Ithaca Experimental, Infinito Super 8, Denver Underground and Art of Brooklyn Film Festival. He is the recipient of a 2021 Artistic Excellence Award from Connecticut Office of the Arts, a 2020 Moving Image Fund Early Development Grant from LEF Foundation, a 2018 LightPress Grant from Interbay Cinema Society, a 2015 LEF Fellowship from Robert Flaherty Film Seminar, a 2013 Mary L. Nohl Fellowship for Emerging Artists from Greater Milwaukee Foundation and a 2008 Cary Grant Film Award from Princess Grace Foundation

The 29th edition of Antimatter opens in just one week. Along with screenings which can be experienced in-person and online we have four public media installations on display that can be seen downtown from October 15th through 25th.

The Legacy Art Gallery (window) will host Winston Hacking's Duotone Handshake. In an experimental film investigating a new form of surface transformation through folding and collage, concealed narratives begin to unfold through a relatively simple process. The film literally unpacks meaning where each crease reveals an image complexity that was hidden beneath the seemingly flat surface.

Lilan Yang’s 未命名菲林消毒怬划 [Untitled Film Disinfection Project I] can be seen in the Deluge transom window. “Censorship is the mother of metaphor.” Guided by state disinfection protocols, this 16mm structural film applies chlorine to imageless celluloid—transforming the chemical “sanitization” of film into a physical enactment of censorship, memory erasure and artistic resistance in response to China’s zero-COVID era.

Kelly Egan’s Of Swallows is installed in the Deluge entrance foyer. Egan writes “A swallow’s eye is longer than other birds. Their visual acuity is said to resemble Raptors. For sailors, swallows are a good omen signifying a close shore. My father loved birds. Since his passing I've felt afloat. Lost and unanchored. At sea in overwhelming emotions. I close my eyes and look for swallows, as metaphorical groundings.”

And finally, the Millie’s Lane Window Gallery features Bocheng Zhang’s Millstone. Millstone takes its cue from the workers’ steady, exact grinding—motion as endurance. Projection, workshop tools and mirrors made during the Cultural Revolution assemble into a site-responsive “vision machine” that settles inside the workshop and learns its rhythm. The objects collaborate, but they also scrape and strain against one another, marking the space with traces—of desire, of longing. Out of this labouring friction, a live-captured interactive image is projected back into the room, calling up a spectre of shared memory.

An anti-landscape performing its own impossible, inevitable annihilation. The north Florida woodlands fractured by strobe light, offering glimpses of its vitality and fragility. Over time, these flickering slices of the natural world become more corrupted and illegible, decaying into garbled data streams. As the forest fails to preserve itself, it demands that we re-calibrate our vision.

Dave Rodriguez is a media artist originally from Miami FL and currently based in Bloomington IN. His single-channel video, 16mm film and live expanded cinema work has been screened/performed in festivals and galleries across Europe and the Americas including Ann Arbor Film Festival, Antimatter, FLEX Film/Video Festival, Cosmic Rays, Mono No Aware, Strangloscope, FONLAD, Onion City Film Festival, Odds & Ends Experimental Film Festival, Florida Film Festival and others. His writing has been published in Found Footage Magazine, Islandia Journal and The Miami Rail.

diario de verano [summer diary]
Anivides (Francisca Duran, Cristal Buemi), 5 minutes (Can)

diario de verano is an exploration of neighborhood flora in Tkaronto, focusing on Kensington Market, Parkdale and Wallace-Emmerson, areas we live and move through. Experimentation with abstract movement and the physical, compositional properties of foraged materials, strengthened our community/kinship to the land and each other. Artistic practices were explored and shared through gathering rituals, stop motion animation and phytograms, creating complex layers of ourselves intertwined through our latinx identities in this short film.
anivides is the interweaving experimental works of multidisciplinary artists Cristal Buemi and Francisca Duran focusing on analog and digital frame-by-frame approaches to showcase their abstract, study and practices. They explore the idea of weight on our structures due to environments, experiences and their direct relations to trauma, healing and transformation. anivides collages bodily works both in human and plant forms from a diasporic immigrant, BIPOC, femme, q***r and intergenerational perspective. anivides’ recent film, diario de verano has screened at Dawson City Film Fest, Les Sommet Du Cinema D’animation, Antimatter Media Art, Analogica, L’Alternativa, LA Film Forum and won Best Animated Film at Moss Farm Film Invitational.

Please join us tonight at 7pm for the opening of Christine Walde’s Libris, an exhibition that considers the library not only as a physical space, but as a conceptual structure through which knowledge is organized, withheld, preserved and imagined.

"As the namesake title for the overall exhibition, Libris is a body of work that uses hand-cut and digital collage, photomontage, and found imagery drawn from libraries, starfields, and geological specimens to explore the relationships between knowledge, memory, and deep time.

Through the juxtaposition of libraries, starfields, and stone, the work reimagines knowledge not as a fixed archive but as an evolving constellation of connections, extending across history, memory, and the vast temporal scales of the earth and cosmos." CW

Provisional poetries, language operations, poetics of project/process/works in progress. A seasonal reading series where poets share and discuss a section of an active body of writing with listener inquiries encouraged.

Steven Ross Smith’s work appears in over one hundred publications and fourteen books, including his seven-book “fluttertongue” poetic series. As SloLo Smithy he’s creating a performative LP with musical collaborators, featured on BandCamp. Smith creates in the region of the Songhees peoples, Victoria, BC. Christine Walde is a poet, artist and librarian whose work combines library and archival research with interests in experimental prose, poetry, visual poetry, performance and visual arts. Walde lives and works on Lekwungen Territory in the Cascadia Bioregion of the Pacific Northwest.

Matt Law Is a poet, speech-language pathologist, editor/publisher of popular abattoir revue and co-founder of rain shadow poetics lab, based in Stz’uminus territory, on Vancouver island. Matt’s writing has appeared in Long Con Magazine, And Magazine, Esse arts + opinions and has been performed at Expozine Montreal, Antimatter [media art] and Pacific Cinematheque. Several recent poems appear in the Semolina Pilchard podcast.
