Congratulations to everyone who brought Ukrainian Day in the Park to life in Saskatoon last weekend! 💙💛

From music and dance to food, community, and traditions shared across generations, gatherings like this create space for Ukrainian culture to be experienced, celebrated, and carried forward.

We’re proud to celebrate the organizations, artists, volunteers, and community members who continue making Ukrainian culture visible and vibrant across Canada.

In this reflection shared through the Kultura Rising podcast, Melanie Turgeon, professor of music at The King’s University and conductor, artistic director, and educator within several Ukrainian music initiatives, speaks to the role support has played in helping artistic ideas move from possibility into reality.

Through her work with Kapella Kyrie Slavic Chamber Choir and the Ukrainian Art Song Project’s Summer Institute, Melanie has seen how investment in Ukrainian music creates space not only for artists and organizations to grow, but for audiences to encounter music that has too often been suppressed, overlooked, or left outside the broader cultural conversation.

At a time when Ukrainian identity and cultural expression remain under profound pressure, her reflection is a reminder of why this work matters. Ukrainian music carries history, memory, resistance, and contemporary experience, and it deserves to be heard far beyond the communities already familiar with it.

September is Ukrainian Heritage Month!

Heritage lives in our language, music, dance, art, family traditions, and community spaces, and in the people continuing to build on what came before them.

Throughout September, we’ll be sharing stories from across the Ukrainian Canadian community and highlighting the many ways culture is being preserved, expressed, and reimagined today.

Take part by visiting a Ukrainian museum or cultural centre, attending a festival or performance, discovering local organizations, reading Ukrainian Canadian stories, listening to the music, or asking someone in your family about a tradition or memory.

With support from the Olga Hocka-Krywonos & Yaroslav Repecha Memorial Scholarship and the Wasyl, Tekla, Darka & Lydia Karabin Fund, Dariyan Dubik began a Master of Music in Vocal Performance at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam.

Dariyan’s research explores the composition, harmony, and history of Ukrainian Catholic chant, with the hope of sharing that knowledge with Ukrainian sacred music communities in Canada after graduation.

This is what investing in Ukrainian Canadian artists and scholars makes possible: deeper study, wider perspectives, and knowledge that returns to strengthen cultural life here.

The Shevchenko Foundation bids farewell to its Executive Director, Bohdana Bashuk, who will soon begin her well-deserved retirement.

Bohdana joined the TSF management team in 2013 and was appointed Executive Director in 2019. With her extensive experience in the not-for-profit sector in culture and heritage, Bohdana understood the challenges our artists and community face in preserving our heritage here in Canada.

She focused on growing TSF, strengthening its operations, and spearheading many new programs to broaden its reach.

One of her first challenges was navigating the pandemic, during which she implemented programs designed to help significantly impacted community organizations and artists remain connected.

The war against Ukraine prompted another pivot to help our community create a safe and welcoming environment for the many Ukrainian newcomers to Canada.

With our 60th anniversary, she guided the organization into a new decade of growth with a refreshed brand.

Despite the constantly changing environment, Bohdana remained focused on strengthening existing and building new partnerships, refining processes to improve transparency and efficiency, and exploring untapped markets for the Ukrainian Canadian story.

“Bohdana leaves a markedly different organization thanks to her dedication, inclusive management style, and unwavering belief in the power of our culture to unite. During her tenure, our funding capacity has more than doubled, our audience has grown exponentially, and our message has been amplified tenfold,” stated TSF President Boris Balan.

TSF is profoundly grateful for Bohdana’s legacy of compassion and impact.
