In 𝘋𝘪𝘴-𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, Gregor Gleiwitz engages with art historical references while pushing painting toward the threshold of abstraction. One of the exhibited works, “28.01.2026.”, pulls inspiration from Leonardo da Vinci’s celebrated preparatory drawing of the Virgin and Child with Saint Anne and Saint John the Baptist, a work also sometimes referred to as, The Burlington House Cartoon.

Rather than reproducing the composition directly, Gleiwitz filters it through sweeping, gestural layers of paint, allowing fragments of the original image to surface and recede. The Renaissance figures become unstable and almost spectral, suspended between recognition and disappearance.

Embedded within the composition is also the imprint of the artist’s own face, recalling the tradition of Renaissance painters inserting themselves into their works — from Michelangelo’s self-portrait in 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘓𝘢𝘴𝘵 𝘑𝘶𝘥𝘨𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 in the Sistine Chapel to Raphael’s 𝘛𝘩𝘦 𝘚𝘤𝘩𝘰𝘰𝘭 𝘰𝘧 𝘈𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘯𝘴. It is a subtle act of artistic self-inscription. Through this gesture, Gleiwitz places himself within the lineage of painting history while simultaneously disrupting it, merging personal presence with collective visual memory.

The exhibition is on view and runs until June 7th, 2026.

Materially, Gleiwitz’s works balance density and dissolution. Layers are built, scraped, and reworked, producing surfaces that evoke organic processes, evoking flesh, landscape, or geological strata while simultaneously maintaining a certain optical flatness. The result is a tension between depth and surface, image and event. These apparitions induce a space that is at once ephemeral and psychological, recalling both the imaginative excess of historical painting and the existential intensity of Informel figuration.

The exhibition is on view and runs until June 7th 2026.

In 𝘋𝘪𝘴-𝘈𝘱𝘱𝘦𝘢𝘳𝘢𝘯𝘤𝘦, Gregor Gleiwitz further intensifies his engagement with the nature and temporality of painting. While his works are grounded in a highly intuitive and concentrated mode of production, the emphasis remains on the image as a site of encounter. Painting becomes a means of testing how forms come into being, how they persist, and how they disappear again. Gleiwitz’s canvases become arenas in which psychic, historical, and material forces converge, visualizing not static forms, but moments of emergence shaped by both control and contingency.

The exhibition is on view and runs until June 7th 2026.

“This [is] the Night, the interior of [human] nature, existing here– pure self–[and] in phantasmagoric representations it is night everywhere: here a bloody head suddenly shoots up and there another white shape, only to disappear as suddenly. We see this Night when we look a human being in the eye, looking into a Night which turns terrifying. [For from his eyes] the night of the world hangs out towards us.” — G.W.F. Hegel

At SETAREH London, Gregor Gleiwitz’s paintings unfold through darkness, gesture, and dissolution — figures surfacing from abstraction only to disappear again into paint. In his accompanying essay, Gregor Jansen places Gleiwitz’s practice in dialogue with Pathos Realism, Neo-Expressionism, and traditions of psychological and existential painting, where bodies, memories, and unconscious visions emerge in unstable and shifting forms.

SETAREH Berlin will be open from 12 - 3 pm on Sunday, May 3rd, during Berlin Gallery Weekend.

“In their artistic work, both Nazanin Hafez and Raisan Hameed explore the image as a contested space between visibility and erasure, where power, memory, and violence have left their mark. While Hafez employs visual strategies of alienation and fragmentation to question the ethical conditions of seeing, Hameed reveals the fragility of images through a visual archive where personal and technological traces intersect. Together, they offer a perspective on images that no longer merely represent, but function as fragile vessels of history, loss, and responsibility.”

ʙʀᴇᴀᴄʜ explores deliberate openings, moments when boundaries between exhibition models become permeable. Here, artistic practices and organisational structures flow between contexts without being neutralised or assimilated. In this sense, the exhibition holds differences in proximity, foregrounding negotiation, exposure, and recalibration as productive conditions.
