Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed
Pip Culbert | Gerhard Hoehme

DC Open | opening Fri. 04 Sep., 6-9 pm

For the first time, the works of Pip Culbert (1938–2016) and Gerhard Hoehme (1920–1989) are brought together in a joint exhibition.

The title alludes to an English
idiom that traditionally symbolises good luck, memory and a new beginning. This is precisely what
this exhibition is about. Both artists work with existing materials. They appropriate, alter, reduce and shift meanings. Nothing arises from nothing. The old is not replaced,
but transformed. What remains are traces of its history – and, at the same time, something radically new.

Pip Culbert (1938–2016)
Born in 1938 in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Lived and worked in London and France. Studied at the Royal College of Art, London. International exhibitions in Europe, the USA, the UK,
Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Her works are held, amongst others, at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa and the Christchurch Art Gallery.

Gerhard Hoehme (1920–1989)
Born in 1920 in Greppin, Germany; died in 1989 in Neuss. Lived and worked in Düsseldorf and Neuss. Studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. From 1960 to 1984, he was a professor in Düsseldorf; from 1984, at the Berlin Academy of Arts and the University of Giessen. International exhibitions in Europe, London and New York, amongst other places, as well as participation in documenta II in Kassel in 1959 and, just recently, a major show at Museum Küppersmühle, Duisburg.

The exhibition is being organised with the kind support of a major private collection, Meerbusch, and FoxJensenMcCrory, the estate of Pip Culbert, New Zealand.

10 Years of the Philara Collection | Voices & Statements

From its beginnings in a former glass factory in Flingern to becoming a fixture in Düsseldorf:
For Daniela Steinfeld, founder of the VAN HORN Gallery VAN HORN, the Philara enriches the city of Düsseldorf in a very special way. For her, the Philara is a vibrant place, characterized by a genuine interest in the artists and their work. It is a collection run with heart, bringing people from the art world together and fostering encounters on equal footing.

Jan Albers is shortlisted for the acclaimed Pauli Preis (formerly Kunstpreis der Böttcherstrasse)

For his presentation he put up a barrier, an entirely new wall into the space at Kunsthalle Bremen, on which he installed the massive work which was created especially for this occasion.

🌻NEW Voices On Art, Episode 104
Collecting on Her Own Terms | Andra Lauffs-Wegner

What makes someone dedicate decades to collecting contemporary art?
In this episode of Voices On Art, collector Andra Lauffs-Wegner talks about growing up with art, buying with emotion rather than investment in mind, and how a private collection gradually became the public exhibition space KAT-A in Rhöndorf, Germany.
We discuss intuition, passion, artists, galleries, curating, cultural responsibility, why the best decisions often come without a master plan, and why buying art can be one of the most direct ways to support cultural production.
This conversation is less about the art market than about the personal relationship we build with artworks - and how art can shape an entire life.

This new episode is in german. It is available wherever you get your podcast and on our YouTube channel vanhorngallery (for other languages use the subtitle tools.)
