In this NEW episode of VOICES ON ART, I talk with film and entertainment producer Larry Kasanoff about creativity, risk, fear – and what he calls “A Touch of the Madness”, which is also the title of his recently published book.

Larry has worked on films including Platoon, Terminator 2, True Lies, Dirty Dancing and the Mortal Kombat franchise. Our worlds are different, still art and film production have a lot in common: both begin with an idea and depend on vision, collaboration, risk and the courage to create.

What interested me most was Larry’s way of thinking about creativity: why playfulness matters, why fear is a hindrance on the way
and why the safe choice is rarely the most interesting one.

We also talk about AI and the human element, his friendship with buddhist monk and teacher Thich Nhat Hanh, mindfulness, and why getting older does not necessarily mean becoming more cautious.

My book pick this time, besides Larry’s own book, is Siri Hustvedt’s Ghost Stories – a beautiful counterpoint to all the “just do it” energy, and a reminder that creativity can also come from listening and openness.

We are delighted to announce that Anys Reimann has been chosen to realize a permanent sculptural installation in the public space of the city of Siegen.

Her project, “ECHOorte,” will consist of 9–11 sculptural sites throughout the city, celebrating the often overlooked contributions of women to Siegen’s 800-year history.

Based on casts of gestures by local women, the sculptures will give visibility to their work, presence and impact on the city, past and present.

For Anys Reimann, gestures are a form of memory, expression and resistance, connecting bodies, histories and voices. With “ECHOorte,” they become a lasting tribute to women and their essential role in shaping the city.

Bremen rules!

This is the last week to see two exceptional exhibitions by VAN HORN artists in Bremen:

Anys Reimann’s solo exhibition Mirrorball at the Weserburg Museum, and Jan Albers’ space at Kunsthalle Bremen on the occasion of the Pauli Preis.

Two very different exhibitions, both absolutely worth seeing.

Both run through October 4.

Remembering Carolin Scharpff-Striebich

The realization that Carolin, this wonderful, good and decent human being is not here with us anymore is deeply painful, and takes time to accept.

I very much liked and cherished her from my heart. I will miss her friendliness, her laughter, her curiosity, her openness, her involvement, her precision and her unrestrained love for art. I just will miss her so much.

I want to remember her like in this photo, laughing and being enthusiastic about art and artists - here with Anys Reimann in her exhibition.

I send all my heartfelt condolences to her family and friends.

Right now at the gallery

This exceptional fresh and sweet work by german artist Gerhard Hoehme is right now on view in our current exhibition, in dialogue with the surprising works by british artist Pip Culbert.

Gerhard Hoehme (1920-1989) was well known for his informel paintings from the 1950s and for his invention of the material paintings, works expanding into space using foil, plastic tubes etc., in his later years. His influence as a Professor at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf was wide spread.

Something Old, Something New, Something Borrowed
Pip Culbert | Gerhard Hoehme

For the first time, the works of Pip Culbert (1938–2016) and Gerhard Hoehme (1920–1989) are brought together in a joint exhibition.

The title alludes to an English
idiom that traditionally symbolises good luck, memory and a new beginning. This is precisely what
this exhibition is about. Both artists work with existing materials. They appropriate, alter,reduce and shift meanings. Nothing arises from nothing. The old is not replaced,
but transformed. What remains are traces of its history – and, at the same time, something radically new.

Pip Culbert (1938–2016)
Born in 1938 in Newcastle upon Tyne, UK. Lived and worked in London and France. Studied at the Royal College of Art, London. International exhibitions in Europe, the USA, the UK,
Japan, Australia and New Zealand. Her works are held, amongst others, at the Museum of New Zealand Te Papa and the Christchurch Art Gallery.

Gerhard Hoehme (1920–1989)
Born in 1920 in Greppin, Germany; died in 1989 in Neuss. Lived and worked in Düsseldorf and Neuss. Studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy. From 1960 to 1984, he was a professor in Düsseldorf; from 1984, at the Berlin Academy of Arts and the University of Giessen. International exhibitions in Europe, London and New York, amongst other places, as well as participation in documenta II in Kassel in 1959 and, just recently, a major show at Museum Küppersmühle, Duisburg.

The exhibition is being organised with the kind support of a major private collection, Meerbusch, and FoxJensenMcCrory, the estate of Pip Culbert, New Zealand.
