SHIFT OF VISION

Now on view
After Before

In the face of ongoing shifts, actions become uncertain.
Rituals take the place of meaning.

Works by Hanne Darboven, William Engelen, Shigeko Kubota, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Takako Saito, Hanae Utamura, and others.

In her artistic practice, Hanae Utamura also explores the tension between nature and civilization, in particular the relationship between humans, science and nature. She understands and uses her own body as a conduit. It serves her as a transmitter between the conflicts of human and non-human forces.

The disaster around Fukushima marks a caesura for Utamura. She confronts this turning point with the series „Inverted Horizon“. In 2011, the artist travelled to Japan to the areas affected by the catastrophe and attempted to reflect on the loss of her family. In the tension between the catastrophe and the media spectacle she performed an artistic intervention in which she involved her mother. Tied to her mother with a rope, the artist draws circles in the midst of the destruction as if on an umbilical cord. The photographic works exhibited at basedonart bear witness to this intense confrontation with transience.

Born in Ibaraki, Japan
Currently based in New York, Berlin and Tokyo.

open  11.05.26 – 27.06.26 | Thu – Fri  2 – 6 pm| Sat 12 – 4 pm and by appointment.

We are ready for you!
Tomorrow Opening 09.05.2026 4-8pm

After Before

In times of ongoing shifts, actions become uncertain.

Rituals take the place of meaning.

The exhibition looks at ritual as a way of structuring time and actions, especially in moments where systems become unstable. Repetition, rule, and sequence appear as procedures in which meaning is not fixed, but shifts, holds, or withdraws in the act itself.

Featuring works by Hanne Darboven, William Engelen, Shigeko Kubota, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Takako Saito, Hanae Utamura, and others. Alongside cultural practices such as tea ceremony.

Only until May 2.
Surface As Field
Pia Fries, Jutta Haeckel, Angelika J. Trojnarski

In Pia Fries’ works, layers of color, superimpositions, and dynamic interventions form the basis of the painting’s structure. The paint condenses into relief-like formations, so that the pictorial space can be physically experienced rather than illusionistic. The white empty spaces of the painting’s background are visible and function as an active counter-space so that the surface unfolds tensions in which color and emptiness enter into a relationship.

Jutta Haeckel destabilizes the traditional closed nature of the canvas by intervening in the structure of the surface. Removed threads, perforations, and working at the front and back of the canvas allow the color to pass through, shift, or seep away. These interventions create a permeable structure in which the structure itself becomes the carrier of the image. Here, the surface becomes an active carrier of the pictorial effect, not a background.

Angelika J. Trojnarski develops her work from her exploration of physical forces and ecological relationships. She translates these questions into painting, working with materials such as paint, lead, soot, and paper fragments. The individual elements remain recognizable, but are interrelated. Layering and superimposition create an image surface that makes processes such as compression, displacement, and transformation visible. The canvas thus becomes a place where natural phenomena are not depicted, but can be experienced.

open  21.03.26 – 02.05.26 | Thu – Fri  2 – 6 pm| Sat 12 – 4 pm and by appointment.
We are closed on May 1.
