Düsseldorf and Cologne Galleries Against the Co-optation of Art and Culture

It is with great concern that we note that the AfD Düsseldorf is hosting an event titled “Cultural Policy from the Right!” on Monday, October 26, 2026, featuring Member of the Bundestag Matthias Helferich at the Heinrich Heine Institute on Bilker Straße. The event is scheduled to begin at 7:00 p.m. Prior to that, there will be a tour of Düsseldorf, starting at the Goethe Museum.

On its website, the AfD draws connections to significant figures in Düsseldorf’s cultural history—including Heinrich Heine and Joseph Beuys.

We, the Düsseldorf Galleries, strongly oppose any attempt to co-opt our city’s history and cultural heritage for a partisan political agenda.

Art and culture do not belong to any political party.

Düsseldorf is a city whose cultural identity is shaped by openness, internationalism, pluralism, and the free exchange of diverse perspectives. Art emerges where boundaries are questioned and where people engage in dialogue with one another regardless of origin, religion, skin color, gender, or political views.

Precisely for this reason, we oppose any attempt to instrumentalize Düsseldorf’s art and cultural history for a political narrative that promotes social exclusion.

Engagement with art and culture must never be used to undermine fundamental democratic values or to retroactively co-opt historical figures for a political agenda.

The Düsseldorf galleries stand for a culture that views diversity not as a threat, but as a strength.

We stand for an urban community in which people of different backgrounds and beliefs can live together and engage in debate as a matter of course.

That is why we call on everyone: Let us not allow Düsseldorf’s cultural history to become the political property of a single party. Let us stand together to defend the freedom of art and culture, the diversity of our city, and the fundamental democratic values of our society. Düsseldorf’s culture thrives on its openness, which must be preserved.

Art is free. Culture is diverse. Düsseldorf remains open.

Starting Friday, October 9, the gallery will be open by appointment only.

Due to construction work by Rheinbahn to replace the tracks and relocate the bus stop directly in front of our gallery, the street will be closed to traffic for several weeks. Work will take place Monday through Saturday.

We’re also happy to schedule appointments in the evening or on Sundays, when things are quieter around the gallery.

Since the current situation makes it difficult to visit the gallery on a whim, we’ve extended the current exhibition by Inge Schmidt through early December. This way, even after the construction work is complete, there will still be plenty of time to visit the exhibition at your leisure and without a prior appointment.

We’ll keep you updated on the progress of the construction work as well as any changes to access and our opening hours.

To mark its 50th anniversary, the Museum Ludwig is staging a major interdisciplinary survey exhibition that explores the connections between the art of the international Black diaspora and European modernism. The exhibition features modernist and contemporary works by artists of the Black diaspora through a host of international loans that are presented in dialogue with pieces from the Museum Ludwig collection. These works include paintings, sculptures, drawings, literature, and music, highlighting the diversity of artistic expression that served as a platform for cultural exchange and engagement at the beginning of the twentieth century.

DC OPEN + EXHIBITION OPENING I 4.9.–6.9.2026

We are delighted to be taking part in Düsseldorf Cologne Open Galleries Weekend from September 4–6 and to celebrate the opening of our new exhibition, “Inge Schmidt. bis dann, plastische Stücke und Zeichnungen,” with you. The artists will be present tonight!

The simple, everyday materials are playing a significant role in her work: thin lumber, cardboard, corrugated cardboard, glue, tape, string, or wire. The artist herself refers to them as “insignificant materials.” It is precisely their unassuming nature that allows for free and unencumbered work. They carry no preconceived meaning or special material aura, but remain open to change, connection, and transformation.

Inge Schmidt’s works are closely connected to their surroundings. Architecture does not serve as a backdrop, but rather as a counterpart: walls, floors, edges, and proportions are incorporated into the composition. Straddling the line between structure and openness, her works give shape to the space without dominating it.

Inge Schmidt was born in Bonn in 1944 and lives and works in Cologne. Her works are characterized by an extraordinary focus on material, form, and spatial presence. Without relying on superficial effects, she creates sculptures and objects whose impact stems from the precision of their composition and her sensitive handling of the respective materials. Each work reveals its own internal order and invites the viewer to engage with the subtle relationships between form, surface, line, and space.

The exhibition at boa-basedonart offers insight into a unique body of work developed over decades and an extraordinary artistic practice characterized by a consistent exploration of material, form, and space.

Reunion is an outstanding artist’s book by Shigeko Kubota, published in 1970. Documenting the March 1968 performance Reunion in Toronto, the book pairs Kubota’s black-and-white photographs of Marcel Duchamp and John Cage playing chess on an electronic chessboard with Cage’s text 36 Acrostics re and not re Duchamp and a blue flexi-disc recording of the event. The flexi-disc represents the only publicly released audio recording of Reunion, a performance in which chess games between Cage and the Duchamps determined the form and spatial distribution of electronic music composed by David Behrman, Gordon Mumma, David Tudor, and Lowell Cross.

The work is part of the exhibition *After Before*, which brings together works by Hanne Darboven, William Engelen, Shigeko Kubota, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Takako Saito, Hanae Utamura, and others.

SHIFT OF VISION

In der Ausstellung widmet sich die Kunsthalle Augsburg der zeitgenössischen abstrakten Malerei mit einem konzentrierten Blick auf drei ebenso markante wie autonome künstlerische Positionen aus Deutschland: Jutta Haeckel, Peter Krauskopf und Moritz Neuhoff. Trotz ihrer gemeinsamen Verortung im Feld der Abstraktion verfolgen sie jeweils eine höchst individuelle Bildsprache, die in dieser Konstellation einen spannungsvollen und vielschichtigen Dialog entfaltet. Die Ausstellung zeigt Werke aus den letzten Jahren sowie aus der aktuellen Produktion der drei Künstler.

In the face of ongoing shifts, actions become uncertain.
Rituals take the place of meaning.

Works by Hanne Darboven, William Engelen, Shigeko Kubota, Nam June Paik, Ben Patterson, Takako Saito, Hanae Utamura, and others.

In her artistic practice, Hanae Utamura also explores the tension between nature and civilization, in particular the relationship between humans, science and nature. She understands and uses her own body as a conduit. It serves her as a transmitter between the conflicts of human and non-human forces.

The disaster around Fukushima marks a caesura for Utamura. She confronts this turning point with the series „Inverted Horizon“. In 2011, the artist travelled to Japan to the areas affected by the catastrophe and attempted to reflect on the loss of her family. In the tension between the catastrophe and the media spectacle she performed an artistic intervention in which she involved her mother. Tied to her mother with a rope, the artist draws circles in the midst of the destruction as if on an umbilical cord. The photographic works exhibited at basedonart bear witness to this intense confrontation with transience.
