Abstract painting has the reputation of being the “easy” one
no rules, no pressure, just intuition
And yet, it’s the style where I see students struggle the most
Because there’s no reference to copy
no clear moment where you can say “now it’s finished”
and no obvious mistake you can point at and fix
I see this a lot in our workshops
students start confident, then they keep adding, correcting, covering
until the painting loses its energy
Not because they’re not creative
but because nobody explained what actually makes an abstract work
For me, it almost always comes down to three things
composition, color harmony, and depth
Once you understand those
abstract stops feeling random
and starts feeling intentional
That’s also why people with a design or visual background often feel more comfortable with abstract painting
their brain already looks for balance, repetition, contrast
If you’re new to painting and abstract feels harder than expected
nothing is wrong with you
You’re just learning a language that was never properly taught
