Landscapes!

Although he's been up here recently sadly a childhood hero of mine, one .mallett , hasn't been in to visit the studio yet.

A talented landscape painter himself, Mr Mallett has a connection to the area as his beloved older brother lived in Newton Dee and worked in the bakery for many years. They shared a passion for art and biking and Timmy drew life long inspiration from Martin and his positive outlook on life.

From the Dee to the Sea, this area has always had an incredible connection to water. Even our national drink Whiskey comes from the Gaelic "Uisge Beatha" (pronounced roughly Ish-Ka Ba-Ha) which means "Water of Life".

However, on days like today, I do wish it wasn't slightly frozen and falling directly onto my head...

Did you catch the Met Gala? This year's theme was "Costume Art", so I had to have a go at this trend.

I'm proud to present, Met Gala outfits reimagined as beautiful gifts from local makers! How did I do?

Last day of April, and we are certainly ready for some May flowers!

April's birthday flower is the Daisy, and wow did I fall into an internet hole researching these...

The name daisy comes from an Old English word meaning "Day's Eye" because of how this pretty little flower behaves, opening in the morning to get the sunshine and closing again when it gets dark.

Each bloom is actually a group of flowers working together in perfect harmony. The yellow centres are one little cluster of blossoms and the white petals are a separate flower. This pairing is why the daisy is often a sign for everlasting love.

This humble flower makes an excellent food source for bees, grows all year round and can be found everywhere on earth except Antarctica.

It can also be used to symbolise innocence, childhood, motherhood, fresh starts and friendship.

I won't be taking daisies for granted again!

How about a sunny afternoon game of this or that? What would you pick?

The final day of , and it's a thought provoking one.

Why Shop Independent?

Well, lots of reasons! Amazon and big chain stores absolutely have their place, and it would be very hard to live without using them at all. However, if you can, purchasing from smaller retailers has so many benefits.

🫂 Human connection. Self service tills, online retail, these cannot replicate a smile and a couple of minutes of excellent banter!

💸 Money mindfulness. Where is your hard earned cash going? Is it helping someone in your community afford to keep doing what they love and feed their families? Or is it going to build a billionaire another rocket?

🌏 Eco Concerns. How far have your purchases travelled? What are they made of? Are they made by people who are exploited, hurt, frightened?

💎 Quality, and Wow Factor! Are you getting something unique and one of a kind? Can you meet the maker? Are you learning the story behind the piece and taking home more than just an object?

I could talk all day about how special independent businesses are, but I suspect I am very much preaching to the choir. Just imagine our town centres without them. A bit quieter, a bit sadder. Life would go on, of course, but something would be missing. And we can work together to stop that happening.

Many thanks to as always, this week is such a fun one every year and I love discovering new businesses!

Saturday small talk!

Without a doubt, the best part of shop life is the people. It's been the busiest day of the year so far, and the banter today has been top notch. From the serious, to the sentimental, to the downright bonkers, I've been enjoying every minute.

We see every emotion under the sun here, and all are welcomed. The studio is a space where you can come as you are and just be yourself. Authentic and real.

continues! Here I am, looking at our beautiful neighborhood. Banchory is truly such a stunning place, and I am delighted I can live and work here. Scolty, the Dee, woodland trails, there is such a range of places to walk and visit right on our doorstep.

Banchory high street itself is vibrant and alive, full of independent retailers. But today I'm looking a few steps behind the high street, where I would love Scott Skinner Square to become Banchory's worst kept secret. Enter under the wrought iron sign just opposite and see for yourself!

A wide open space full of benches and places to relax, we are stuffed full of fabulous businesses.

Come to to be fed and watered.
to be pampered and beautified.
The Cut Barber shop for well coiffed gentlemen.
for relaxation and zen moments.
for all your personal castle needs
Banchory Library for books, newspapers, social groups and more

And

Studio 1 for locally made arts, crafts, gifts and souvenirs.
