It’s National Volunteers’ Week, and we couldn’t resist sharing this perfect snapshot of what “a tough day at the office” looks like for our brilliant volunteers.

Here’s Cheryl, one of our long‑standing Ropewalk stars, happily getting stuck into her shift one night last week …

except… Cheryl, who’s that you’re sat next to?
Oh, only Blur drummer Dave Rowntree, casually signing copies of his new book while she sells them beside him.

Just another day volunteering at The Ropewalk.

A huge thank you to Cheryl — and to every volunteer who keeps this place running with warmth, humour and endless energy during National Volunteers’ Week and all year round.

Wot Italian? is the latest addition to our autumn Ropery Hall programme, and we can’t wait for a night of silliness with Boothby Graffoe and Antonio Forcione!

Wot Italian? Is a hilarious and heartfelt collision of Graffoe’s sharp wit and whimsical storytelling with Forcione’s virtuosic guitar mastery. This show promises a mix of brilliantly crafted songs, laugh-out-loud anecdotes, and jaw-dropping musical skill — all served with a side of Mediterranean flair.

From tender ballads to toe-tapping tunes, expect an eclectic mix of genres and an atmosphere that’s as warm and inviting as a Tuscan summer evening. Whether you’re here for the laughs, the tunes, or a little bit of both, “Wot Italian?” is a show that will leave your heart lighter and your spirits soaring. Don’t miss this unique collaboration — an evening of joy, artistry, and laughter awaits!

This show will take place on Friday, November 13. Tickets cost £21 each (£23 on the door) and can be purchased by clicking the link in the comments, calling us on 01652 660380 or by visiting the Craft Gallery.

We would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful maintenance volunteers for all of their hard work helping to keep the building running smoothly. 🔧🔨

From minor plumbing fixes and lighting repairs to all of the countless jobs in between, their time, skills and dedication make such a difference behind the scenes every single week.

So much of what they do often goes unnoticed, but their efforts help ensure that the building remains a welcoming and well-maintained space for everyone to enjoy.
Thank you!

Humber to the Wash – Selection Day

After a record‑breaking number of entries to the Humber to the Wash Open Exhibition over the weekend, yesterday brought the very tough task of selecting the final works.

On what was easily one of the hottest days of the year so far, our selectors Tim Needham and Janet Cox managed to keep their cool as they carefully viewed every single submission. Their dedication and sharp eyes mean we’re now ready for the next stage.

You’ll be able to see the results of their hard work at the Exhibition Preview on Friday 5 June, 6–8pm, and then throughout the summer, Tuesday to Sunday each week.

Thank you to everyone who submitted work — the standard was incredibly high, and we can’t wait to share the chosen pieces with you.

We’re delighted to have new work in by ceramicist Sophie Olivant, whose beautifully crafted pieces are inspired by the stunning landscapes and historic farmsteads of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

Based at Oxcombe Pottery, a ceramics and art education space offering hands-on workshops since 2014, Sophie creates a bespoke collection of domestic-ware designed with both functionality and beauty in mind. Each piece is traditionally wheel-thrown on site, featuring carved decorative surfaces, hand-pulled handles and distinctive splashes of Oxcombe blue.

What makes this collection particularly special is Sophie’s use of glazes developed from the colours of the surrounding landscape - even incorporating wood ash from trees on the Oxcombe estate itself. Fired in a large gas kiln using a reduction atmosphere, the process brings out the rich warm tones of the iron-rich clay and natural mineral glazes.

The Oxcombe range is high fired, making it durable, hard wearing and perfect for everyday use - including being dishwasher safe.

Pop in and take a look at these beautiful new pieces for yourself!
