Centrala is a multifunctional art space in Birmingham run by the Polish Expats Association, a non-profit organisation presenting art from Central and Eastern Europe and the UK. Our aim is to create an inspirational place and platform for building social ties. The innovative programme includes socially-engaged contemporary art from Central and Eastern Europe as well as artists interested in the region’s culture, history and socio-political situation. We organise and host social and political discussions, conferences and workshops. We also host unique experimental music programme and are provide space for innovation and experimentation. We are advocates for all CEE migrant related matters and support minorities with our communities providing space and inclusive space and programme. We are actively support programmes of migrant sector organisation trying to facilitate positive environment for migrant integration.

Join textile artist Annette Ratti here at Centrala on Saturday 24th October for a hands-on mending workshop exploring two approaches to visible repair: Japanese-inspired Sashiko/Boro stitching for woven fabrics and seed square darning for knitwear.

Rather than hiding damage, this session treats holes and worn patches as a chance to add colour and story to a garment, not just fix it. Bring your own medium/lightweight jumpers, jeans or canvas clothing to work on - or use provided swatches to get some practice in.

Then Birmingham EMOM are back in next week, along with a visible mending workshop, a hybrid clothes-swap-and-rave, and live music from jazz to hardcore to round out the month.

Repair a trouser zip with us! Here at Centrala we host a free Repair Cafe every Wednesday from 12-5pm, where you can use sewing machines and other equipment with support and guidance from our team to repair and modify your own clothes.

Our Repair Cafe weekly sessions are open to all and are free to attend. No booking is required.

Repair Café is funded by the Npower Business Solutions Foundation.

In just a few weeks Centrala is proud to present legends of the American alt-rock underground, Savak. This October will see the release of Door Deals & Debt, an essential collection that spans the band’s career to date.

The core trio includes Sohrab Habibion (Obits, Edsel) and Michael Jaworski (The Cops) – who sing, play guitar, and split the songwriting – along with Matt Schulz (Holy F**k, Enon) on drums. Bassist Matt Hunter (Silver Jews, New Radiant Storm King) joins for live performances - recommended for fans of Television, Wire, Mission of Burma, and Magazine.

Savak are playing Centrala on 4th November, with support from Oxford’s post-hardcore outfit Sinews, and local art-punks Exotic Pets. Tickets on sale now over on the Centrala website.

Have you visited our latest exhibition yet?

“Q***r Futures”, is a group exhibition of film, photography, sculpture, and print by seven LGBTQI+ artists from Central and Eastern Europe now living in the United Kingdom curated by the Polish artist and curator, Zula Rabikowska.

The works are drawn from long-term personal archives and collaborative projects, including analogue and pinhole photography processes, an installation informed by Romanian and Moldovan folklore, self-portraiture, and documentary film addressing forced migration and LGBTQI+ life on the margins of Central Asia.

By bringing in a myriad of voices and experiences, the exhibition seeks to create a safe space to explore q***r and trans experiences from across the region, reflect on migration, and contribute to a more welcoming, compassionate future.

This World Mental Health Day, we're proud to share that members of our team joined community leaders from the CEE us. Centrala Communities Network to complete mental health first aid training.

This year's World Mental Health Day focuses on lived experience, real voices and real change. We believe communities should not only be listened to, but have the knowledge, confidence and opportunities to help shape the support they need - that's why building knowledge and confidence within our team and our communities matters.

SET TIMES FOR FRIDAY!

Ritual Error are a three piece noise-rock and post-hardcore band from London, drawing on angular hardcore, no-wave, and metronomic noise rock to create tense, wiry and rhythmically driven songs. Their sound sits in the lineage of bands such as Unwound, Shellac and Drive Like Jehu, combining dissonance, repetition and abrasion with a strong sense of groove.

Support comes from Birmingham-based post-hardcore/progressive outfit IO and newcomers Prejudice:

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us last Friday for the opening of Q***r Futures! It was heartening to see so many people exploring this group exhibition of film, photography, sculpture, and print by seven LGBTQI+ artists from Central and Eastern Europe now living in the United Kingdom curated by the Polish artist and curator, Zula Rabikowska.

In Q***r Futures, stories of migration, crossing borders and escape are interwoven with experiences of love, celebration and fear. The exhibition is open from now until 12th December, Tuesday-Saturday 12-6pm.
