“I tend to work quite spontaneously, but that spontaneity is very deliberate. Perhaps I’ll throw a load of paint on a piece and see what it does. The composition slowly emerges as I experiment, and I’ll keep working on the structure until it feels right. I love building up a sense of history – it’s so interesting to think about what happened underneath to bring the painting to its final point.”

“I’m most inspired by landscapes that feel spacious and uninterrupted — places with depth, openness, and a strong sense of horizon. I tend to avoid built environments and am instead drawn to areas where weather and light play an active role in shaping the experience of being there. I’ve lived in Bristol for 25 years and the surrounding environment frequently inspires my practice.”

One for a double take! On show at the Affordable Art Fair earlier this month, so many of you were crowding around Anna Boss’ new collection. Small in scale but big on detail, layer upon translucent layer of paint and boatbuilders’ epoxy resin give the artists’ new works such depth you stop twice.

“My work is moving in a new direction... The tree and river theme marks a departure for me. While more figurative than my other paintings, the process of focusing on a smaller space has sparked ideas for developing more abstract pieces. Watch this space!”

Elaine Jones’ new small-scale series went down a storm at the Affordable Art Fair Hampstead last weekend. We’re excited to see where her new process leads – we’ll certainly be watching this space! 🌳

It’s tomorrow! Join us on sunny Hampstead Heath for the next Affordable Art Fair UK. From Elaine Jones’ small (but mighty) series of treescapes to Anna Boss’ Cornish coastal scenes inspired by her summer residency in Prussia Cove – there’s so much to discover at this unmissable event for contemporary art collectors.

Dynamic mixed-media works from Provence-based Catherine Monmarson will be showing alongside Tom Hughes’ bucolic imagined landscapes inspired by the southwest – plus cross-Channel scenes from Andrew Hood as his paintings take us from French plazas to the city of London itself.

Don’t miss what’s set to be a brilliant fair – we still have a few remaining complimentary tickets at https://buff.ly/JfYUMYX!

“Recently, I’ve been working on my smallest works to date! They’re small but mighty: standing at 20cm tall, they hold their own with as much strength and drama as my larger paintings. For me, small paintings take just as long to complete as large ones. They simply present different problems! The hardest part is keeping them dynamic, as I don’t have the space to pour or throw the paint. But I’m loving this new process, and it’s been a fantastic way to play out new ideas.”

You can find the full collection of Elaine Jones’ latest small-scale series at the Affordable Art Fair UK next week! Kicking off with a private view on Wednesday evening, join us from 6 – 10 May for what’s set to be a brilliant event on sunny Hampstead Heath. “I’m a landscape artist whose work grows out of direct experience of place. My paintings are often inspired by walks through the land or, more recently, time spent at sea. I aim to capture the atmosphere of a moment — the light, weather, movement, and emotional presence of being in a certain location. I love to explore how a landscape feels as much as how it looks.”

We caught up with Anna Boss ahead of the Affordable Art Fair UK in Hampstead this next week. For an early glimpse at the artist’s brand-new seascapes, head to our online preview at https://www.firstcontemporary.com/hampstead-preview. 🔗
