From the early 1790s, rope making was one of the first industries to establish itself in Charlestown, supporting the construction of the new port. Largely unchanged today, this 1980s view shows the ropewalk—a long, straight track where materials, originally h**p, were laid out and twisted together to form rope. Charlestown’s ropewalk is over 300 metres long and was capable of producing ropes up to 1,000 feet in length. (Credits & Thanks: Charlestown History Group. CHG/SM1247/P4287). ;
