We're open for European Heritage Open Days!
Next weekend, Saturday 12th and Sunday 13th, free mini tours every hour from 11am until last tour 3pm. Tours last approx half an hour, donations welcome towards our turf house roof repair.

If visiting the estate this Sunday (23rd) please take extra care as Lissan Horse Riders have an open day, there will be extra traffic and car parking may be limited. While a lot of our paths are walkers only, some are shared with horse riders. We wish LHR a successful and enjoyable day.

Thank you to everyone who liked and shared our post, it's great to see the amount of interest and support for this amazing building. We have set up a JustGiving page for those who would like to help. As always, as we have no paid employees, every penny donated goes towards our fundraising (JustGiving add a small optional admin fee but when you check out you can waive this or change to your preferred amount)
We need to purchase a substantial number of bangor blue slates to repair the roof, each one costs approx £5, will you "buy a bangor blue" .....or maybe a few?

Unfortunately we recently received the disappointing news that our application for funding to repair the 17th Century turf house roof was unsuccessful. The propping and tarpaulin installed by our volunteers back in 2024 to protect the lovely arched roof trusses had bought us a little time, but the sticking plaster won't hold much longer!
Realistically we will never manage to raise the couple of hundred thousand pounds builders estimate to have the building transformed into the proposed all weather space for everyone to use.
Our only hope to save this historic building is to carry out the roof repairs ourselves, at no cost for labour.

Our wildflower meadow in front of the house is literally jumping at the minute! The common green grasshopper is our wildlife Wednesday topic this week, and we have loads of them, though it took a while to get one to sit still long enough for a decent photo. The males make that distinctive noise, known as stridulation, by rubbing their hind legs against special comb-like structures on their forewings. After mating the eggs are laid in the soil ready for hatching next spring.
If you're out for a walk, take a dander along the mown paths that wind through the meadow and see if you can spot some grasshoppers 🦗

Another wildlife Wednesday post - we spotted this beautiful butterfly at the weekend, a silver washed fritillary. Our ancient woodland on the Lissan estate provides ample habitat for species such as this. They lay their eggs on trees close to the caterpillar's food plant, the common dog violet. Another example of how important our native wildflowers are, unlike the colourful non native wildflowers so often planted.

A very well done and many thanks to Heidi for tidying up the flower bed at the front of the house today. While we can't claim that she travels all the way from Germany just to help us, she plans a work day at Lissan into her holiday each year and it's always a pleasure to catch up again.

A great turn out for yesterday's house tour, it's encouraging to see so much interest in Lissan House and receive complementary feedback on the quality of our tour.
We often have visitors who give back to us with stories of past visits to Lissan House and Hazel - yesterday was no exception! A very big thank you to Diana Heaney who brought along a wonderful pastel portrait of Hazel, she was asked to produce this shortly before Hazel passed away and has now donated it to Lissan House.
