This week's wildlife Wednesday story - we noticed this wee beauty for the first time this weekend, growing in the stone wall near the great barn. Identified as Erinus Alpinus, but with the lovely common name, Fairy Foxglove. How could you not love that!
Native to the rocky mountains of central and southern Europe, it is not very common in Ireland, and we were delighted to discover it.

Thanks to the visitors to the estate this morning who alerted us to this - a disposable barbeque from a May day family day out, irresponsibly left behind to smoulder on a wooden picnic table after everyone has enjoyed relaxing on the lawn! A potential fire risk, and more work for us repairing or fundraising to replace.
Thankfully most of our visitors treat the estate with respect, but we will be reviewing our guidelines and updating where necessary 😞

May is National Walking Month and we were delighted to welcome Dungannon and District Rambling Club and Kerry from Ulster Federation of Rambling Clubs to Lissan House this week. A pre walk recce with one of our team to help plan the route ensured the route suited the needs of the group, and all enjoyed seeing our beautiful ancient woodland.
We are happy to meet walking group leaders considering a visit to the Lissan House estate, providing a walk with built and natural heritage to give your group something extra, something different.

A big job ticked off the (very long) to do list yesterday - the guttering on the long passage has been in dire need of a clear out, what a transformation! Fundraising our running costs is our first priority, if we don't cover those we lose this place. We also need to balance that with taking time to carry out maintenance jobs like this to help preserve the building.
All of this work is undertaken by volunteers, local people giving their time to keep Lissan House here for everyone to enjoy.

Great to see the Rainbows, Brownies and guides from 1st Loy Guides enjoying the estate recently. No better place to enjoy nature activities, the Lissan estate has an abundance of native trees and wildlife, we are truly blessed that Hazel gifted this wonderful resource to the community.

Following the previous post, spotted this female orange tip butterfly in the deer park field this morning, you can also see a tiny orange egg on the ladies smock stem. Only the male butterfly has the orange wing markings, both have that lovely mossy green marbling on the underside.

A Wednesday wildlife story - mowing is kept to a minimum on the Lissan House grounds, giving nature a chance to thrive. Look closely at our ladies smock flowers in front of the ballroom, do you see the tiny orange egg? That will hatch into an orange tip butterfly caterpillar which will feed on the plant stem, pupate and emerge next spring as a butterfly. Ladies smock is one of the few flowers which support this species, we have lost 97% of our meadows since the 1930s due to modern farming and drainage of wetlands. That's loss of habitat for this flower, loss of this butterfly amongst many other species dependent on meadows.
Leave a little patch wild if you can, "nature isn't tidy"

Delighted to have welcomed Professor Roibeard O'Maolalaigh to Lissan House recently - Rob, amongst many other titles, is the Professor of Gaelic and Director of the Digital Archive of Scottish Gaelic. His particular interest was James Head Staples (1849. - 1917) and the work he carried out as a linguist -

" He found two native speakers of Tyrone Irish; he took "copious notes of the Tyrone pronunciation"; interesting vowels but consonants much reduced towards English. He refers to them as Broughdearg/ Bruachdeargh speakers"
