Just to let you all see the turf house roof from where we're standing! It really is now or never, this wonderful building has reached the end of the line. Realistically, to fundraise enough money to hire a building firm to repair the roof is beyond us - we, a small team of volunteers, are prepared to tackle the job, unpaid, in our spare time, and this video shows the enormity of the task. Many thanks to those who have already donated, if you would like to help us raise the cost of the materials, check out our "buy a Bangor Blue" appeal on JustGiving.
We will donate our skill and time, please support us by donating towards the cost of the timber and slates, together we can save this building!

A few Friday night figures!
6 weeks ago we shared our disappointment that our application for funding to repair the 400 year old turf house roof was unsuccessful
404 peope reacted to that post
59 people replied with opinions/suggestions/advice etc
40 people clicked on the JustGiving "buy a Bangor Blue" link and made a donation - many thanks to you, and those who donated privately, your support is much appreciated
3,000 - the number of slates we need to buy to repair this roof
£5 - the price of 1 slate - easy multplication to figure the cost!
450 - the approx number of hours in the past couple of months that we, a small team of volunteers,have given to this project, at no cost - clearing the site,building scaffolding, stripping slates, replacing roof timber etc
The big cost of any restoration project is labour - the main man along with a small team of helpers are giving their time, for no pay, to restore this wonderful heritage building. When completed, we will have a much needed all weather space for those who use the estate - walkers, school groups, allotment holders etc
Wee hearts, hugs, thumbs up etc don't buy slates and timber! Follow our updates on the progress so far, and if you feel inspired to help, "buy a Bangor blue"

How beautiful is the contrast of light and shadow in this view of the turf house interior - since we launched our " Buy a Bangor Blue" JustGiving appeal, we have been hard at work behind the scenes. Over the next few days we'll update you with our progress, and hopefully inspire some of you to help us save this amazing 400 year old building.

If visiting the estate this Sunday (27th) please take extra care as Lissan Horse Riders have an open day, there will be extra traffic and car parking may be limited. While a lot of our paths are walkers only, some are shared with horse riders. We wish LHR a successful and enjoyable day.

It's been a busy few weeks with lots of lovely visitors from near and far! Robert gave Lee Staples from Toronto a tour of the Staples ancestral home - we were interested to see the book written by a family member in 1966 tracing Lee's connection to Lissan House, and we presented Lee with a copy of "Hazel's book"
Pat entertained a group from Dublin/Wicklow area who were on a walking holiday in the Sperrins and escaped for a few hours to indulge their interest in history with our wonderful house tour - all amazed with the stories, history and CS Lewis connection.
Ever reliable, Pat again entertained visitors from Washington state, USA, again, an exploration of their ancestral connection to Lissan House.
As volunteers giving their time to raise the funds needed to keep this place here, it's rewarding to see our work being appreciated by those who visit, especially so when it's people who have travelled a long distance to make connection with their own personal history.

A very big thank you to all who made Lissan House their chosen European Heritage Open Day event! Your generous donations towards our turf house roof repairs are very much appreciated - Lissan House and Demesne are neither privately owned nor council funded. We are totally volunteer run, so every penny raised goes towards keeping "this golden place" here for the benefit of our community.
A much missed friend of Lissan often commented, "Hazel would be smiling down on you" To see her gift to us all still here, still loved and continuing to progress thanks to a group of people willing to donate their time and skill, appreciated by so many visitors from near and far - yes, Hazel very likely was smiling this weekend!

Thanks to all who came to visit today, we'll be sitting waiting patiently (though with shoes on!) to greet you all tomorrow. Come along from 11am until 3pm for our free mini house tour, plus a chance to see the progress made on our yard buildings. All donations go towards our turf house roof repairs.

This year's EHOD theme is "Heritage at Risk : Revive, Resist, Reimagine" and no better example than the great barn. After the house tour, take a dander through the yard and see how we have revived the building, resisting the ravages of time to save this wonderful building, now reimagined as a space which has already hosted heritage skills demos. The volunteers who repaired the 50 metre long roof will be happy to chat about it, and also the progress so far on our current project, the turf house roof repair. All donations this weekend will go to our "Buy a Bangor Blue" appeal, helping us save another important heritage building.
