Did you know, our museum shop stocks a range of interesting books about the local history of Egham, Egham Hythe, Englefield Green, Virginia Water, and Thorpe?

Sales go towards the Egham by Runnymede Historical Society, the group that founded our museum in the 1960s and continues to celebrate and promote local history in our area to this very day.

Today is the 86th anniversary of the sinking of the HMS City of Benares following an attack from a German U-boat.

On that ship were many children, making it one of the worst maritime disasters involving children.
One passenger was eleven year old Colin Ryder Richardson.

Colin went on to retire in Egham and donated the jacket he wore, that he attributed with saving his life, to our museum.

To commemorate this anniversary, and tell Colin’s remarkable story, we have been working on a new video, hosted by our curator, Becky.
